Yesterday I test drove a new 2005 CLK320 and was disappointed with its transmission (or engine?). Here is what happened: when releasing gas pedal after accelerating the cars seems to stay in gear, and as a result uncomfortably slow down rapidly for a second or so. This experience was similar to that when driving an automatic transmission car in a "low" gear at high speed and suddenly taking foot off gas pedal. But the car shouldn't do it in "D"! I would expect, as in all other cars I've driven there would be a "free-wheeling effect" in "D" drive as well.
The salesperson said there might be a problem with this car's transmission and so I test drove another car he offered, but the effect was the same. He called today to say that mechanic would adjust the transmission and I could come in for another test drive. I loved the inside and outside of the vehicle, but now I am sceptical.
Another thing I noticed that a fully loaded CLK320 sells for about $500 less than the invoice price (at carsdirect.com). This is more than $3500 off of the MSRP price! I am wondering if the price reflects the problem with transmission or what?
Any suggestiongs/thoughts from users are greatly appriciated. Thank you.
