The S280 in Diana's crash was part of a fleet that was used by the Ritz Hotel, mostly for big spending guests who want to go shopping and be driven around. Even today, if you walk around to the side of the hotel in almost an alleyway, you will see 3 or 4 black S Class (W220) cars lined up. I sought it out last time I was there and it is almost a macabre tourist thing. No doubt they have probably upgraded to the W221 by now.

I work in NYC NY Palace Hotel. Audio/Visual engineer
We have an RR Phantom and MB Maybach parked in the front at all times. And they get rented out all the time.
Both the RR and Maybach get rented out all the time.
Great cars all around.

You ever see an S Class with the rear badge removed?
Alot of europeans remove their S badges as not to show off,
but also as a disguise, since the S Class is highly sought after and
stolen and whisked away to former East Bloc countries. Maybe
Princess Diana's car was a 600 with an S280 badge.
Also, several years ago, the former DaimlerChrysler Chairman Jurgen Schrempp left his armored S600 for just a few minutes and it was stolen in broad daylight. That is bold.

The car in the first pic with Diana walking by is NOT the car in the accident.

I remember coming home that night around 4am est in '97 and seeing it on CNN.

I had the North Am version (300 SE) color clone as my first w140 and it still can reach 237km/h with alot of road.

First of all its not Di's car...it's One of the Fhiad's cars.

In downtown Paris, France you couldnt even use the 600's power, plus its too big for the streets around there. Thats why the s280 was a intelligent choice.

Finally, I dont care who you are and who's protecting you...no seat belt no chance.

PS maybe Suge Knight should have been driving a 600 instead of that non-armoured 750il.

The 280? You'd think a princess would have the best one, not the cheapest... I automatically assumed the 600. Makes me wonder with all that front end damage and engine crunching, what would have been the outcome if the w140 was the 600... The 280 must be reeeaaaally slow!
You gotta remember though. Those pictures you see are probably the ones that are taken after the fire service have cut the vehicle roof and such like with their hydraulic cutters.

she wasnt ever really a princess..... just saying
Actually, according to Burke's Peerage when she married Prince Charles she became "Her Royal Highness Diana, Princess of Wales" When she divorced she lost the title of "Her Royal Highness" but when she died she was still titled "Diana, Princess of Wales".

Sarah Ferguson, on the other hand lost not only the prefix "Her Royal Highness", but also the title of princess. She went from "Her Royal Highness Sarah, Princess of York" to "Sarah Ferguson".

Thank you DC.

If and when her son succeeds to the throne William has made it clear that he will restore the HRH prefix to his mother`s title.

Well, I'm not sure that Princess Diana would have cared about HRH one way or the other. She probably would have agreed with The Duke of Windsor when he said, " We are more concerned with courtesies that curtsies!" after they announced that the Duchess of Windsor would not be styled "HRH".
