Hey Everyone,

I was just watching the news tonight regarding the new evidence that they just found regarding the Princess Diana incident. I never really realized that Princess Di had a W140 Benz until I saw a picture of the crash scene on the news.

Does anyone know what model she had? Just curious.
I've included a few pics . . .

Regards,
Bryan

The 280? You'd think a princess would have the best one, not the cheapest... I automatically assumed the 600. Makes me wonder with all that front end damage and engine crunching, what would have been the outcome if the w140 was the 600... The 280 must be reeeaaaally slow!
I thought the exact same thing . . . I thought for sure it would be an S600, but I just thought I would ask to make sure.

Was Diana's car a Limousine?
Was it long wheel base, or short?
Was it armoured?
What year was it?

Regards,
Bryan

Here is a link to a CNN article on the saftey feautres of the S-Class. Do all S-Classes have ESP as mentioned in the article? (I have a '93 300SE)

Despite everyone's assuption (including my own) that she would be riding in a 600. It wasn't her car! I have read somewhere that the car was owned by the hotel, hense the 280!
Yeah, I just read that as well. . . I think the MB was owned by a limousine company owned by the hotel. But still, one would think that she would have a more expensive car to ride in . . .

I guess it doesn't really matter, because the S280 should be just as comfortable as any other S-Class. Also, since she was not the one driving, she could probably care less whether the car had lots of power or not. Limousine drivers shouldn't be going too fast anyways . . .

you guys make me laugh
There is nothing wrong with the S280, how can you diss it without even having ever driven one.

It was never released in N.America because the gas guzzling mentality there is that anything less than 3000cc is underpowered, hence benz thought it would not sell

I really dont understand why you need large engines as you cant even drive over 55mph
No, I am in no way dissing the S280! (In fact, we have the 300SE, the smallest available W140 to the US). I just thought that royalty would ride in the most expensive model, regardless of whether it is better or not. . . (just because it costs more :)

Re: Re: you guys make me laughThere is nothing wrong with the S280, how can you diss it withou

Most people here dont like extreme engineering in automobiles. Thats the reason cadillacs, buicks, corvettes and lincolns still sell high.

If they were to sell S280 here, people would have said: Damn, its the same engine from a c-class put on an s-class, it must be underpowered for a vehicle so heavy. (Thats what people say to me when they find out that 3.2 is an I6 not a V8)

Here is an example of a small, well engineered engine beating the crap out of a large gas guzzling engine:

Porsche 911 Turbo Vs. Crovette ZO6

///S320
Good point ///S320! That's what I really hate about American cars . . . they may have a big engine and lots of power, but they are terribly inefficient. It goes along with the whole North American mentality that "bigger is better".

I will never buy an American car, unless I just need a winter "beater". . . Or of I want to enter into a Demolition Derby [:I]

Re: performance

Well, I'll tell you why we like power. Its not that we're going to make daily top speed runs in our cars, its having that power on demand that we like. I don't want to have to wait 15 seconds for a small engine to make enough power to pass grandma on the freeway, I want to get around quickly, and I DO NOT go the speed limit. I dont want to have to press 80% throttle to get my car accelerating fast enough for my liking, thats why I have V8s, I love torque. I think the 280 is WAAAAAY too small of an engine for such a massive car as the S class.
Yeah, everybody would always like more power . . .
We just decided to go with the 300SE or three reasons:

1.) The crazy insurance rates in Ontario, Canada [:(]
2.) Fuel efficiency
3.) Initial Cost of the car

Of course, if the S600 had the same insurance rates, used the same amount of fuel, and cost the same, we would have certainly bought one of them instead [:I]

Re: Is that sonic?

haha! that running guy is cool. [:D]
"That running guy" is Sonic the Hedgehog . . . don't you remember Sonic from the old Sega Genesis gaming system?

I never really played the game, but I thought the hedgehog is kind of neat . . .

Re: I like that sonic avatar too!!!

Do you have anymore?
Sorry . . . I don't have the URL that I got it from. I just did a search on google for "Free Animated GIFS" or something like that, and found it on a freebie site . . .

i find it odd that a multi-millionare princess with a multi-millionare boyfriend leaving one of britain's ritziest hotel surrounded by bodyguards would drive away in a S230 and not a S600. i also recalled that the media mentioned that the benz had bulletproof panels installed which slowed down the rescue operation. would it make sense to bulletproof (a very expensive option) a vehicle with such a small engine? taking in account the much added weight and especially if it is used regularly to outrun the paparazzi.
I believe that Diana's car was an S280, not an S230 (I don't believe that an S230 exists . . .)

I think it has been previously mentioned that the car did not belong to Diana, but to the hotel that she was staying in or something. If the car was indeed bulletproofed, then you do raise a good point that it is weird that they didn't use an S class with a larger engine. Not only does bulletproofing cost a lot of money, but it would also add a lot of weight to the car . . .

Bryan

No offence, but i think amgbenz ment S320, because I´ve never heard of a S280 (of a W140)... Or it was a W140, wasn´t it ??
I know you have probably never heard of an S280, because you probably live in a geographic location where it was not offered. I know that the S280 was not available in North America, but it was offered in Britain. It is the lowest model of the W140 available (that I know of). I believe that you could even get that car with cloth seats, but I could be wrong . . .

Bryan
