Princess Diana's W140 S-Class

Hey Everyone,

I was just watching the news tonight regarding the new evidence that they just found regarding the Princess Diana incident. I never really realized that Princess Di had a W140 Benz until I saw a picture of the crash scene on the news.

Does anyone know what model she had? Just curious.
I've included a few pics . . .

yes Princess Diana was riding in a S280... (i remember it was an engine size 2.8 not available in North America for w140)... really unfortunate though what happened to the princess...

regardless, the W140 is definitely a prestigious vehicle fit for royalty!

The 280? You'd think a princess would have the best one, not the cheapest... I automatically assumed the 600. Makes me wonder with all that front end damage and engine crunching, what would have been the outcome if the w140 was the 600... The 280 must be reeeaaaally slow!

I thought the exact same thing . . . I thought for sure it would be an S600, but I just thought I would ask to make sure.

Was Diana's car a Limousine?
Was it long wheel base, or short?
Was it armoured?
What year was it?

Here is a link to a CNN article on the saftey feautres of the S-Class. Do all S-Classes have ESP as mentioned in the article? (I have a '93 300SE)

Yeah, I just read that as well. . . I think the MB was owned by a limousine company owned by the hotel. But still, one would think that she would have a more expensive car to ride in . . .

I guess it doesn't really matter, because the S280 should be just as comfortable as any other S-Class. Also, since she was not the one driving, she could probably care less whether the car had lots of power or not. Limousine drivers shouldn't be going too fast anyways . . .

There is nothing wrong with the S280, how can you diss it without even having ever driven one.

It was never released in N.America because the gas guzzling mentality there is that anything less than 3000cc is underpowered, hence benz thought it would not sell

I really dont understand why you need large engines as you cant even drive over 55mph

No, I am in no way dissing the S280! (In fact, we have the 300SE, the smallest available W140 to the US). I just thought that royalty would ride in the most expensive model, regardless of whether it is better or not. . . (just because it costs more :)

Most people here dont like extreme engineering in automobiles. Thats the reason cadillacs, buicks, corvettes and lincolns still sell high.

If they were to sell S280 here, people would have said: Damn, its the same engine from a c-class put on an s-class, it must be underpowered for a vehicle so heavy. (Thats what people say to me when they find out that 3.2 is an I6 not a V8)

Here is an example of a small, well engineered engine beating the crap out of a large gas guzzling engine:

Porsche 911 Turbo Vs. Crovette ZO6

Good point ///S320! That's what I really hate about American cars . . . they may have a big engine and lots of power, but they are terribly inefficient. It goes along with the whole North American mentality that "bigger is better".

I will never buy an American car, unless I just need a winter "beater". . . Or of I want to enter into a Demolition Derby [:I]
performance

Well, I'll tell you why we like power. Its not that we're going to make daily top speed runs in our cars, its having that power on demand that we like. I don't want to have to wait 15 seconds for a small engine to make enough power to pass grandma on the freeway, I want to get around quickly, and I DO NOT go the speed limit. I dont want to have to press 80% throttle to get my car accelerating fast enough for my liking, thats why I have V8s, I love torque. I think the 280 is WAAAAAY too small of an engine for such a massive car as the S class. That car has to have some seriously short gearing to get that thing to move, and you can be sure the top speed isn't going to be very fast, granted in the states you'd probably not hit it all the time. If a car can't make a 0-60 run in less than 8 seconds, its not fast, in any way.
Funny you should say that the Turbo beats the Z06... We'll compare new to new here, 996 twin turbo to the Z06. The 911 weighs 219lbs more, and they both run an equal quarter mile time of 12.9 seconds, that doesn't beat the crap out of either one. The entire efficiency thing is just because the Porsche has a turbo, giving the 3.2l 6cyl more than 100hp per liter. Now if you turbo'd the Z06, you'd have the same situation. Magically its efficient.

So, you don't need a big engine to move a big car, you need a powerful engine to move a big car, or a very slow top speed. You can't have a weak engine have any type of decent acceleration and also a good top speed. Not dissing the S280 at all, just think thats not the type of engine you want in a land yacht. As Tim 'The Toolman' Taylor says, "more power!"

Yeah, everybody would always like more power . . .
We just decided to go with the 300SE or three reasons:

1.) The crazy insurance rates in Ontario, Canada [:(]
2.) Fuel efficiency
3.) Initial Cost of the car

Of course, if the S600 had the same insurance rates, used the same amount of fuel, and cost the same, we would have certainly bought one of them instead [:I]
henri paul

the driver had three times the legal limit of alcohol and also prozac, wonder why he crashed?

Dear Gill:
I know why you can not understand the North American desire for powerful engines. You live in London; I have been there putting around at 5 mph, in incredible traffic. When you live in a tiny country where the highest mountain is the size of an ant hill, you don't understand the concept of a huge country with huge mountains that requires climbing power.
By the way I am not dissing G.B. my forfathers came from Glen Coe at the base of Ben Nevis.

Hi Barry,
I think you misunderstood my point. I am by no means personally attacking my buddies in the USA.I understand your point about mountainous country and about pulling power, BHP etc etc. Everyone, myself included, find a larger engined vehicle desirable. The point I was trying to make is that how can those whom have never driven a S280 state that its underpowered?. Indeed, there are those who have never driven an S320 and those same people will say that the S320 is underpowered. As you and I both know this isnt the case. All I am trying to say is that 'dont dismiss that of which you (not you personally of course[:)]) have no experience'.

The S280 is a formidable vehicle that is only available in SWB so has an immediate weight advantage over a S320 LWB. It uses the same M104 straight six twin cam 24valve benz engine that's in the S320 with a slightly smaller bore on each of the cylinders. Like my buddy ///S320 was saying, it extreme engineering. The fuel consumption is less than that on a M104 S320, it doesnt suffer the notorious gasket oil leaks that S320 does, insurance and service is cheaper and the performance difference is negligable.

One only needs to look at the Audi S3 (small 3dr hatchback) which has a small 1.8 engine, six speed transmission, 4WD yet can hurtle to 60 in less than 7 seconds and is electronically limited to 155mph.
This kind of car wouldnt sell in N.America.

You are right about the UK, Its a small country - Central London like any major city in the world is congested to the point that we sometimes can't travel faster than 5mph during the rush hours or if there are road works. Its acceptable to cruise at less than 100mph on our motorway network which I do on a daily basis to get to the south coast where I work. We can cross the 7 mile stretch of the English Channel and be in mainland Europe in less than an hour and head to the German autobahns where there is no speed limit. I have driven my car at well over 130mph legally.

Gill
