(in case you haven't seen this before)

by Phil Maggitti

The White House revealed yesterday that President George W. Bush had purchased the Popemobile during a late night Web browsing session with his twin daughters, Jenna and Barbara.

According to the White House statement, the president was intrigued with the following item: "Late model, mother-of-pearl ML430 Mercedes-Benz. Automatic, AC, PW, PS, PB, power bed pan, tinted windows, 10-disc CD player, and bullet-proof solarium. Low mileage, garaged, owned by elderly gentleman who only used it to go to church on Sunday."

"Dad was looking for another birthday present for Mom; she wasn't really stoked about the puppy," said daughter Jenna, the blond, bouncy one who wants to be a school teacher. "We didn't know it was the Popemobile, though, until we e-mailed the seller to ask what a solarium was."

After receiving a reply in sixteen languages from [email protected], Bush phoned Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who had just emerged from her nightly session in her hyperbaric chamber. "Connie told Dad, ‘It's the pope, you moron,'" said daughter Barbara, the dark-haired one who wants to be Rosalynn Carter.

"There was only half an hour left until the auction closed," said Jenna, "so we knew there wasn't enough time to teach Dad how the bidding worked. We just mashed the ‘Buy Now' button, and as Dad would say, mission accomplished."

Sources close to eBay revealed that high bidders at the time the president made his winning bid were [email protected], [email protected], and [email protected].

An official from the White House motor pool said he expects the Popemobile to arrive at Andrews Air Force Base on Tuesday. Outgoing Secretary of State Colin Powell will be there to greet the vehicle. After Powell has washed and waxed the Popemobile, he will drive it to the White House.

"Dad can't wait to see the car," said Barbara. "I bet he keeps it for himself. He told us he was going to change its name to the Bushmobile because that's what he called his first car in high school."

In related news, the Vatican announced just this morning that it had purchased a BMW Dependsmobile with Scotchgard interior for the Pope's planned trip to Lourdes.

What kind of seat restrain does he have? I can't see him too comfortable above 10 mph.

Those rims! Is the pope riding on 20's? It looks like it's been lowered too! I haven't seen these rims before. Are they OEM? They are nice! Maybe pope-edition..

That can't be a 430. It has the '02 face lift!

10 disk CD changer? What does the pope listen to? His own greatest hits? ...CD 1: Sunday, May 8, 2005; CD 2: Christmas mass, '92; etc...

The Maybach wheels looks amazing on the ML!! I love the Euro headlights. No FUGLY amber reflectors. Looks much less like a minivan with the solarium.

It's definitely a 430. From a DaimlerChrysler press release:
With its V8 engine with a displacement of 4.3 liters and an output of 272 hp, the ML 430 was adequately powered to serve as the basic car for the new popemobile.
It was completed in early 2002 so the facelift parts were available.

The Holy Father doesn't require a seat belt, as rear-facing cardinals help to cushion any impact. You can see them if you look closely, or in this photo:

While we're on the subject, for our newer members, a classic from the Benzworld files:

The pope had just finished a tour of the east coast and was taking a Mercedes limousine to the airport. Having never driven a limo, he asked the chauffeur if he could drive for a while. Without much of a choice, the chauffeur climbed in the back of the limo and the pope took the wheel. After gleefully accelerating to about 90 mph, the pope was pulled over by the state patrol.

The trooper came to his window, took a look inside, and said, "Just a moment, please. I need to call in." The trooper called in and asked for the chief. He told the chief, "I've got a really important person pulled over and I need to know what to do."

The chief replied, "Who is it? A senator?"

The trooper said, "No, even more important."

The chief asked, "It's the governor, isn't it?"

"No. More important."

"The president?"

"No. More important."

"Well, who the heck is it?!" screams the chief.

"I don't know," said the trooper, "but he's got the pope as a chauffeur!"
