Trunk closer and license plate lights failed.

I just had this same issue, getting 3 errors now on third brake light, left license plate light and right license plate light all non functional.

The red button does not illuminate. The green emergence light does work.

I took the trunk lid apart to look for frayed wires or broken connectors and don't see anything. Also exposed the trunk closer assemble on the left of the trunk and am not seeing anything. Prior to this, the lights would work temporarily if the trunk was only open 2" or so.

I've left it taken apart incase anyone has ideas, I assume there is some type of sensor for the trunk closer, wonder if that's failed, was also going to start hunting down fuses.

This problem happened to me as well on my 2007 E63.

It turned out to be the wiring harness: the cable bundle was in a bad spot and eventually the door closing arm sliced a wire or two making it inoperable.

It was a big messy repair taking the liner and harness apart (it was under warranty when it did) but the repair was quite simple: re-solder some wires back together and place harness out of the way.

Pulling diagnostics with snap on tool says it the rear Sam module, which has all the relays , fuses etc in the left trunk panel, next to GPS. Going to pull it out this weekend and see if I see anything obvious, since a new one is $388.
