This may not be what you want to hear but it is possibly your problem.
ML55 has speed sensitive steering.
This is meant to work by lightening the steering at low speeds and stiffening it at high speeds to aid stability.
When it goes faulty it works in the reverse of the way I've set out above.
The culprit is usually the traction control module which controls this function.
Not a cheap or easy fix.
