Did my sway bar bushing this morning, and went to take it out for a drive, and heard an awful noise coming from underneath the hood when turning. Noise seemed to be coming from the ps reservoir. Opened it up, there was almost NO fluid, and there was a bit of orange foam on top.

I've known I've had a leak somewhere for awhile, but I took it for a long trip last week, and I guess it exacerbated the problem.

Need to troubleshoot, but I'm not sure which ps fluid to use. I have heard of people using atf, though I don't know what kind. That could be totally wrong. The stuff that's in there now is red, and looks like atf.

Don't want to go to the dealership, though I will if I have to. Looking for something I can get at the usual chains, as I live within walking distance of a few.

Dexron II or III

my local autoparts store just look it up in their book and haul an equivalent off the shelf. They have been selling me a synthetic fit all my cars variant for the last few years, which is bit cheaper, but still not cheap.

What you need to do is fill the reservoir with ATF/PSF ( it's the same in the trans and PS on ours), put a big catcher underneath ( don't laugh, I have a big old ellipsoid satellite dish which is ideal for this), run the engine for about 2 mins, check the reservoir, see if you have lost any, and then see where it is landing in the catcher.

If not losing any on idle, twirl the wheel lock to lock a few times and check then.

Thanks Elmer. I went with dexron iii. I found a sticky on the subject, too. So perhaps this wasn't even necessary.

Though my master cylinder is leaking badly, and brakes were noticeably spongey. So no more drives or fixes until that is resolved :(
