I think my steering is to hard compared to others 190. Checked the tire pressure, normal. Is it possbile to adjust the power steering to become lighter? How can I do that?

check the manual or search the forum for ps fluid type. basically have ur ft wheels off the gnd and undo the lines going into the pump and turn the wheel to take the fluid out, and then fill.

It does't it give or take power to the steering, it's for adjusting the free play of the steering wheel. I had similar problem, I replaced the filter and fluid (ATF oil), steering pump, and finally replacing the steering itself solved the issue.

Your are wrong, what timofeev said...the one for adjusting mixture is in the body of the carburetor. the allen screw is for adjusting the play of the steering wheel, I just done it today!

My only problem is that my steering wheel won't just go back fully to center, I have to aid it in some tight turns. Will that mean that I have to losen it a little bit? I did tighten it at the very first place because I had lots of play.

Where is that play adjuster screw anyway? Do you have a picture of it? Does it even exist?

tilostick it would help if u completed ur profile, year make engine size etc, the allen screw under the air filter is attached to the fuel distro assy . that adjust the air fuel mix. i have completely striped and taken my car down to the bare metal before and i havent seen a screw that can adjust the steering play. play in the steering is caused by bad tie rod ends, idler arm bushings, or bad gears in the gear box. like i said before try to flush out your power steering system first, thats the mostlikely cause of tight steering.

ps. dave not to be a dick about but can u post in the read first thread for the newbies to complete their profiles..thx

Jippi, I've updated the info you said. I drive a 190D 2L 1986. I'm almost sure that the allen screw as nothing to do with the fuel mix (at least that screw) once it's right ON the steering box. It must do something to the steering, just don't know what and don't want to mess up the car. That same allen screw is tighten with a nut. I supose to turn the screw must release the nut, right? I'll try to flush out the fluid first and see what happens. tks, regards

if its on the steering box then its not under the air filter its under the intake technically. take a picture of it and post it up. to my knowledge it might be used to hold the steering gear still to remove a nut or something. if u can post a picture of it.

Yes I do, even I don't have a digital camera, I managed to get you an illustration photo:

Just check No. 6 ... this is the screw.

In this link:

Mercedes-Benz Ponton Recirculating Ball Steering

...it says:
"Adjustment: Correctly adjusted worm bearings have no clearance and no pre-load. The Pitman shaft (Figure 1: 4) adjusting screw (Figure 1: 6 ) must be adjusted when the steering wheel is in the straight ahead position; tighten the adjusting screw until the spring is fully compressed and then back off approximately 3-4mm, measured at the circumference of the adjusting screw."

So, you say by adjusting this screw the play is adjusted as well? Would be interesting if you got results by doing that. Please explain us how did you do it.
