Would like to avoid using the cig. lighter for powering my cell phone / iPod. Cell phone is USB. I hate having the ashtray open just to access the cig. lighter and have the ugly courd snake across the shifter etc.

Is there another CONVENIENT place to tap into 12 volts that may be better hidden, like in one of the center console compartments... anyone have any thoughts?

The 12v wire on the back of the cigar lighter is a good source and it's fused. Bear in mind that it is only powered when the key is at #1 or #2 position.

Removing the center console to route the wiring is quite easy -- just 6 phillips screws. There are several DIY's on it's removal. Maybe 30 mins first time and 10 mins after.

I power lot of stuff on my car and open ashtray never bother me
But usually I use 4-multisocket with about a foot of cable, what is long enough to go into glove compartment where all big plugs hide.
Was even thinking about small modification to the first plug (pretty small), what would allow closing ashtray, but again -it does not bother me that bad.
