Afternoon,

Been looking at those powerbox tuning chip things on ebay and am now wondering if they are any good. I have a few questions.

1. Do they work?

2. Which is the best make?

3. Do other components fail early due to increase bhp and torque?

Thanks
Rob

Well most cdi are under powered, they same unit in a car would have more bhp, so The engine will cope, I would not reccomend anything that tricks the Ecu, Go for a proper remap.

1) they certainly do mate.

2) they're all the same, just a resistor or in the case of the better ones a variable resistor that tricks the ECM into thinking the rail presure is lower than it is.

3) In theory no parts should fail because the pump can only achieve so much rail pressure, but if your engine is high mileage or tired, you will have to expect possible failures of the injectors having high leak off which will result in hard starting or even the high pressure pump failing due to the higher demands on it.
Throw in higher cylinder temps & higher coolant demands, the head gasket could fail on higher mileage engines too.
All said & done all you're doing is putting a 108CDi to the 110 performance levels & if you've got a 110 taking it to the 112CDi levels.
I've got one on my 110, big increase in torque, don't really need 1st gear unless the van is loaded, better fuel consumption too!

Ugly

remapping

Thanks to those who have replied. I have a 52 plate with 58k on the clock, thinking about getting it remapped properly.

I went to Paramount performance and bought a v map.

Its a device where you can have two maps, power and economy say and then upload to your ecu yourself.

The other advantage is that it will diagnose fault codes too.

I have gone for an economy map which has increased power and torque and Im getting 35-40 on my 120 cdi.

Hope this helps.

Ive just been to Paramount performance in Slough today.

Basically I bought the V switch as I have a Jeep with the same V6 as my 120 Cdi has and they told me it would work on both vehicles and read the fault codes on both vehicles. It turns out they had made a mistake and to compensate they offered me a free re-map on one of the vehicles. As the van is used most I have had that remapped and the V-switch changed to work on the Jeep.

I don't know what mpg Im now getting but by the end of tommrow I will know as I have a 350 mile round trip to Grimsby. But the van is pulling a higher gear, accelearting faster at takeoff and at motorway speeds.

Paramount have offered a special deal for a limited period to anyone on this forum quoting my username (top Cat 2006) It is that a normal remap is £350 + VAT on top (£402.50 total) but they will do the work for £345 including the VAT. They can map the vehicle to achieve whatever you want (more power, more economy or a mix of both) They have a rolling road so can also produce power maps and torque curves) (couldn't put mine on cause it was auto and also the traction control does not turn off fully)

They can also offer the V-switch which the advantage is you can have two maps and switch between them yourself and also it has a built in OBD reader for £399+VAT on top.

There phone number is 01753 533633 and you need to press option 1 and speak to Gerald. Web is Paramount Performance Ltd - Engine tuning, Chip tuning, Diesel tuning, Viezu Technologies Give them a call or drop a line as they are only too happy to talk to you and find out what you want and how they can help.

I hope this helps and hopefully some of you will benefit.

Regards

Performance Chip off e-bay

I bought one for my 2004 115 and it did not work. subsequently bought an 05 and an 07 and it does not work on any of them. In fact all battle to start when cold & seems heavier on Diesel as well. the guy was called "tasosis"
I bought a chip for a VW Polo at the same time however and that works well.
