I am getting a rattling sound after the car heats up on say a 20 minute drive. The sound appears to be coming from the catalytic convertor. The sound only appears after this distance. Otherwise, the car sounds fine at start up and short distance drives.. The sound is more pronounced as the engine is revved and limited at idle. What could be the problem? Replace catalytic convertor?

On a cat, the ceramic core and the converter’s metal outer shell don’t expand and contract at similar rates. When the ceramic core separates from shell (breaks, or the mat material deteriorates), it rattles. This is common and the only fix I know of is to replace the cat. I believe it's covered under the 8 year/80000 mile emissions warranty.
