Can it be narrowed to functions of the power train vs. suspension? There isn't enough information to make a diagnosis. The popping sound could be the shifting of the suspension components. I'm more inclined to look to suspension since the rear would be prone to make a grinding sound, or clicking sound as opposed to the popping sound that would/could occur on rough roads at low speed. Does the popping sound occur on smooth roads? If not it is more suspension issue than rear. Good luck.

it does not make the sound on smooth roads..
does the air spring make popping sound? the sound is heard from an area just above the air spring, however the air spring seems to be attached to the car very good and no space is seen between the car and the top of the air spring. when someone is bouncing the car from the trunk, the sound is heard just above the air spring and sounds like bone joint popping. the sound is also more pronounced on gravel road

Check your suspension. It's not your rear. Most probably it is not torqued properly or secured. Every bolt and nut has a torque spec. Good luck.

Thank you . I removed the wheel and started inspecting all the bolts and turned out one of the bolts of the lower control arm I would think the name is was not tightened enough, the one closer to the wheel. I had to turn it about 6 to 7 times and was hoping it would be the culprit. I test drove the car and the culprit is in jail. excellent
