I'm curious here how people like their W124 to look.
Here's the options

1. Original
2. Factory enhancements (like smoked lenses or wheel options)
3. Visual enhancements (such as chrome or paint color)
4. Drive enhancements (such as wheel size)
5. Interior enhancements
6. Anything goes (even including pink fur on the dash)
7. I don't care ... I just drive it.

Me ... I like mine original. #1

Of course there is no right or wrong here. No moral judgements made on anyone (unless of course you *do* have pink fur on the dash in which case a pox on you).

I would have to go with option number 2. Some enhancements are good, such as Euro market headlights or maybe a nice set of AMG wheels. Other than that, leave it alone.

Nothing is worse than seeing an otherwise nice looking 124 with giant wheels and chrome all over the place.

I vote #2, with limitations. I think swapping out NA headlights with OEM Euro parts is fine and other "refinements" like that. I'm also good with wheel swaps as long as they are OEM MB or AMG and they can be installed without mods. And for me, no bigger than 17".

I like doing factory upgrades and period correct enhancements.

My car has period correct AMG aeros and its getting a manual gearbox in December.

It's a little bit of 2, a little of 4 and toss in some 5.
When I bought the car I just didn't like the headlights. DEPO lights solved that problem.
The wood was cracked and weathered from the AZ sun, so I sanded, filled and painted all the wood gloss black. I think that it looks good and contrasts the grey interior.

The wheels weren't cutting it for me and sort of "dated" the car so I updated with chrome 8 holes that fill the wheel gaps nicely. I always try to keep my mods clean, and try my best to keep with the "spirit" the orginal designers intended.

1, 2, 3 (within reason, see below) and, 7 and 8 Stereo.

On my black E320 i was intending to paint the grey lowers in a similar black to get a monotone look. It really updates thier look.

On my grey 95, I want to do the Euro side markers and stereo. That's about it. I've already got two different sets of 16 inch wheels (W203 C class pictured and CLK lightweights) and tint.

I can't answer this one by number. It depends a lot on the car and how I intend to use it.

For my 124 I tend to prefer to keep it mostly stock'ish. It is my daily driver and my business car for driving clients around. Most things I change are for function rather than looks. Even changing the wheels was done more for ease of keeping clean than anything, and because the original wheels were beyond hope of ever being clean. And I'm all about keeping things "clean" and not tacky or cheap in the design area too. I tint my windows because I get heat rash really bad if I don't, I upgrade headlights so I can see, etc. Nothing is done to be a "look at me" thing.

BTW, I absolutely do NOT tint anything related to lighting. I need all the output I can get from the headlights and I don't like the idea of my brake lights and such being harder for others to see.

What's striking to me as I straddle both the VW and Mercedes communities, is how temperamentally conservative the latter are wrt the general consensus about how and whether folks should deviate from the factory playbook. While, the VW crowd can often be a no holds barred endorsement to alter from mild to wild as seen fit, with results that run the gamut. There clearly are notable exceptions to both examples, but MB owners really do tend to revere the form and format created by the factory engineers, which is something I admire, but I'm too much of tinkerer to follow with my own vehicles.

But I think your tinkering is good tinkering, such as getting more performance. Things that serve a purpose. It's not like you're bolting airplane wings onto your trunk or anything. Or are you? LOL!

I truly do appreciate Teutonic engineering, so form should follow function. My general approach is to reach into the marque's parts bin first, when I'm modifying anything and/or to make it myself. I think a lot of MB guys think of mods only in terms of the tacky aftermarket add-ons, which do seem to be a sketchy way to go. The cool thing about the 124 is that it and the 201 are really the first modern MBs, and the company didn't deviate too far for the next decade, so lots of 129, 202, 203, 210 parts can be added as upgrades.
