the rear bumper on my 88 560sl is scuffed and scratched. what compound can I use to hand polish it? I have used the Mcguires alum polish on the stainless above the windshield, but it does not work on the bumper.

From what I understand the bumper is either highly polished stainless or nickel plated. Youre not going to get those scuffs out by hand. Hell, I don't even know if it's possible. I've been trying (unsuccessfully) to get them out for a long time. Maybe someone else has a success story...

Both front and rear are stainless on a 560SL. They're actually covers...big pieces of trim. I have yet to find a "compound" that works on the scratches. Have considered using 400 grit and then re-polish. Would be a big job...would probably be a bit easier with them removed from the bumper. IIRC both actual bumpers would have to be removed also to get to the bolt/nut holding the bumperette. Good luck.

I believe you ought to just clean and polish the Chrome/Stainless the best you can, then paint your black rubber bits with Forever Black and call it quits.
