Yes, I had read about the online SCN coding. It's a shame that M-B are deliberately making it difficult for us to work on our own cars. There's gotta be a way to do that ourselves...I think that's what the Vediamo database is for, isn't it?

That UK vendor looks like he's got his act together. Would that there were such vendors here in the States! And I don't mean the FleaBay vendors, I mean ones like that UK vendor with their own Web sites, support, all that--real shops.

SDnetControl Manual

A few days ago, I tried to fire up my DAS to run some tests on the Airmatic System, and discovered that the Dell D830 was totally dead. I discovered today that the problem was that high humidity in the garage had screwed the keyboard. I replaced the keyboard with one from a parts D630 (same part number), and I am back in business.

Booting the system took a lot longer than expected. At last a small window popped up apologizing because SDnetControl had failed, followed by another window telling me that Druckekonfiguration had also failed. Say what?

Google quickly led me to https://docs.google.com/viewer?url=...mb/handbuch_sdnetcontrol_en_www.agson.net.pdf which is the manual for SDnetControl. I read it, and understood most of it.

It is obvious (I think it is, anyway) that I do not need, and do not want SDnetControl on my system.

I ran msconfig on the D830, and saw a very long list of programs and utilities that are being loaded at startup. I try to keep this list to the minimum really needed to use the system - but I have no idea what most of these things do, nor do I know which are needed by DAS. I don't want to mess up the DAS software, so my next step will be to google each entry on the startup list, and try to determine whether DAS needs it or not.

The next question is, How did this get on my system? The system has NOT been on the internet. The D630 that Rob is using was loaded from the same software, and should be exactly the same - it isn't. His system does not have the SDnetControl software loading.

WTF??

Hi @wallyp ,

I'm no expert here, but I thought SD Net Control was to do with WIS / EPC / ASRA ??

Maybe @pinkster or @Paul600600 can clarify ??

SDnetControl is apparently loading when DAS starts. It dies when it can't reach home base, but it is trying to load, greatly slowing the process.

I guess my next step will be to get my hands on Rob's D630, boot both systems, and run msconfig on both to see what is loading on the D830 that isn't loading on the D630.

Hi @wallyp ,

Sounds like you already know more about it than this "software numpty" :wink

I have a good friend from across the pond supplying me with a 1tb hard drive loaded with SDS/DAS/WIS that is Windows 7. My d630 was dropped and now it doesn't see the hard drive. I tried reseating it but no luck. Mine was Windows XP. If in fact it is my hard drive that is bad, will this just pop in with no issues? It is not SSD.

Pop in? Yes.
Work? Perhaps, perhaps not.
Boot to Windows? Depends upon whether the problem with the Dell is only a damaged hard drive.
If it boots to Windows, will it run XENTRY? Perhaps, perhaps not. Every version of DAS/XENTRY that I have used has to have a KEY that will allow the program to run. That key must be generated on that specific laptop, and is generated using some hardware variables of that laptop. In other words, that copy of DAS is married to that laptop, and anything that changes those variables will change the key, which will no longer be recognized, and DAS will no longer run.

It is barely possible that your new hard drive might contain a "key generator" that will generate the correct key for that laptop.

The Dell can be made to run Windows 7, but the native operating system for both the Dell and DAS is Windows XP.

Hi,

The Dell D630 / D830s run 32 bit Windows 7 fine, update Bios to latest, and you can use 4gb RAM with them.

I would expect your new HDD to be Windows 7 32 Bit.

There is only 1 guy i know that has SDS running off Windows 7 64 bit, and he is where I got my "new" 12 / 2017 HDD

The Dell I'm using for that is a D830, 2.4 ghz Processor, Latest Bios, and 8Gb RAM, because the 64 bit windows uses it all :grin

I seriously doubt your Dell will be any good if the HDD is FUBAR, as it must have hit hard :(

But ................. Stranger things have happened though you may be lucky :wink

Cheers Dave

I finally got a Lenovo X61 configured to run DAS/Xentry and I'm using a Sabrent USB to RS-232 cable with the FTDI chipset. Pulled the drivers from the Sabrent site, configured the port of COM2 and bingo! It works like a charm. The X61 is a great little sub notebook with almost 5 hour battery life.

Hi,

Nice work, great news for a lot of guys.

Sadly I couldn't use it, my eyesight is much happier with a D830 size screen these days :big laugh:

However I'm sure there will be members who would like to do this, any chance of a "How To" ??

A How To would be tricky because I'm not sure what I started out with, with respect to the disk image. I do know I used Acronis and I believe the disk image was for the T30(supplied with the system I bought). Once burned to a disk and placed in the X61 you can download the drivers for the X61 here: https://thinkpads.com/support/Thinkpad-Drivers/download.lenovo.com/lenovo/content/ddfm/X61.html

Once you have the system up and running you will want to enable multi processor support(if you have it enabled already and you're using a dual or more processor you'll see them in task manager) by modifying boot.ini. You'll need to adjust folder properties show that it shows hidden system files. Right click on boot.ini and uncheck readonly. Copy the boot.ini to another folder and then edit it. Under [operating systems] copy the multi(0).... line and add the following to the end of it.

/kernel=ntkrnlmp.exe /hal=halmacpi.dll

ntkrnlmp.exe and halmacpi.dll should already be in the SYSTEM32 folder since most of these systems are XP SP3.

You'll also want to change the description to reflect it Multi Processor so that you can select it at boot time.

You can do this mod if your machine is a multiprocessor one but not reflected as such in Task Manager.

I've been trying to enable AHCI support(I'm using an SSD) but haven't found the correct Intel drivers for my system for this. The driver that should work blue screens on installation and I have to use a USB stick with a Windows 7 setup to boot and go to the DOS prompt to delete the offending .sys file in order to boot the system again.

So, I've read through this (thank you).

But I'm not certain what to do next...

My SDS has been wonky lately, it's installed on a Dell D630, which is slow. Old machine. 1GB RAM.
The SDS was installed as a new hard-drive from the vendor. I've got the C4 version, which runs on a LAN cable.

I tried cloning the drive to a new Samsung SSD to improve the speed of the machine (it takes several minutes to boot).

Now, with the Samsung, the SDS says it's not authorized for this machine.

So, I reckon that I either put the old drive back in, or I need a new set of keys for my SDS.

But, since it was wonky before, and I already own the C4 and cables, is there a vendor from whom I can get just the software and new keys?

Further, I am running the Volvo VIDA software on a Dell Latitude E6420, running Windows 7 Pro, with 4GB of RAM and a new 250 GB Samsung 960 SSD. So, I could load a new SDS software on that machine, right?

Thanks in advance.

If you want fast, go away from the dell, if your software is win 7 it will work on almost any laptop that can handle win 7.
I use a HP 2760 i7 with 8gb ram.
I also use dual boot so I can run 2 versions of Xentry and BMW on the same computer.
You could do the same with the Volvo software. Let me know if you need help setting it up.

Thanks. Dual boot might be beyond me...

Oddly, the old drive had four partitions. I cloned that over, since I’m not computer smart enough to know how to organize the drive.

Speed on the Dell D630 (running XP) is now decent with the new drive.

Speed for VIDA on the Latitude is good with the SSD. Just bought that one, so I don’t see a need to get another laptop.

I think I’m OK with the D630.

Will PM about the key generation issue.

You can short-cut selecting the proper vehicle by simply entering your VIN - I used a label-maker to post my VIN and my buddy's VIN next to the keyboard for easy access (I appear to now be a semi-senile old fart). You will still have to select the proper transmission.
