I just bought a 1980 300SD Turbo Diesel and drove it from Flagstaff, AZ to Phoenix without problems. It ran very well and was a joy to drive! However, the tachometer and clock didn't work, and the lights on that side (right-hand) of the instrument cluster didn't work. Halfway through the trip, the clock seemed to be working so I tried to set it. While moving the knob to set the clock, the tach jumped to live, and read about 3k. It worked for a few minutes, then went out again. No jumping needle -- just on for five minutes, then off for good. I read about a thing called a Tach Amp, in the hood, and tried the fix with cardboard, but that did nothing.

This morning, I took out the cluster. It was not too hard, except for the difficulty of removing some of the connections. Also, I saw that there was black sticky oil all over the bottom of the cluster, and on the bulbs on the right-hand side. When I removed bulbs on that side, oil was on the inside of the bulbs. There is a photo of the odometer with some white stuff around the opening, and you can see how dirty the white digit is, as well as how dirty the hour hand on the clock is. Maybe cause of the oil?

One metal connection in particular has me puzzled. It's a metal fitting that I needed a wrench to remove, and it is behind the left-hand side of the cluster, near the oil pressure indicator. You can see the brass fittings in the photos. Can I drive the car with the panel out? Is that tube pressurized? It doesn't seem to be a cable, and the nut holding it on was quite tight. Thanks a lot!

Its a fitting for the oil pressure gauge
If you drive the car with the line disconnected it will squirt out oil!
We dont have sds in NZ so I could be wrong but I thought That the Gauge went electric with the 126 or is your car a late reged 116.....

Wierd. That socket is roughly where my economy gauge is connected. On my car that is a vacuum tube but its just a tight rubber fit. No oil.
I do remember an old post where somebody had oil coming up to their cluster, also a diesel car i believe. Cant remember what that was though sorry.
Do you have an economy gauge in the cluster?

Yes! I just called my MB guy

I just talked to my MB guy, and he told me it's the oil pressure gauge. "run it without connecting that and your car will fill up with oil." lol. He told me that I can take apart the instrument cluster and put only that part into the car so I can drive it.

Yes the cluster looks more W116 style. Sshanky you might be in the wrong forum. Nice car though, love 116's :)

I honestly am having trouble figuring out which it is -- It's a 1980 300SD Turbo Diesel...here are some pictures.

OK, I took apart the instrument cluster. There was oil in many places. I put the part with the oil pressure gauge back in, so I can drive the car. Here are photos:

Indeed...the serial starts with 116.120. But why on the main forums page on this site is "300SD Turbo Diesel" listed in this forum? The W116 forum only lists 300SD. That's why I chose this one. Anyone know how to cross list this post over there in case anyone's interested?

I have a w116 and saw your post. As far as I know, all 300SD's were turbo diesels. I know that the early 300D's (w123) were non-turbo. Anyway, looks like the oil pressure gauge has been seeping oil for a while. I would suggest looking in the salvage yards for a gauge cluster. Maybe, you can find one with nice, clean dials and pointers, etc. Let us know how you make out.

Wasnt there a cluster for sale a while ago in the 116 section?
Yes, I think it still is. But, it's Km/h, has no tach, etc. He could probably find a direct replacement locally and not have to pay shipping, etc. I believe the OP lives in an area of the country where there should be plenty of those available.

I live in Phoenix, and I hear there are some good yards around here with lots of MB parts. I'm still new at this, but it's exciting. I also have a 1981 300D that will be needing some TLC.
