As I was driving this morning to work, I noticed that my tranmission would not shift to the higher gear. I tried to to switch to the tip tronic and shift it myself but that would not work either, it shifts from park to reverse and everything like that fine but when in drive, it will not go to the higher gear... The last time I went to Mercedes for my service, they did mention that my transcon was leaking??? I tried to check the fluid but could not find the dipstick for the transmission fluid, also if I do need more do I use MB synthetic? Please help, thanks in advance!

Speaking from my experienced that happen to my older S model(97) .Similar to your problem, Slow shifting and sometimes- it won't go to higher gear. and even my transmission has leaks( 8 mths).

At the end, they have to replace the whole tranny but it was too expensive .So at the end they rebuild mine and 80% of my tranny/transmission /gearbox is new. After receiving the car, the car still has slow shift and they change the "gear recognition swith". Now it all good now. Smooth shifting and no more leaks.

Good luck with your problem.

it sounds low on fluid, take to an independent specialist and tell them to run your codes first!!!!! Then let them know you got in the car and it wouldnt shift!!! MERCEDES BENZ BUILDS WONDERFUL "DUMMY PROOF" VEHICLES.... IF THE GEARS CHANGE ADEQUATELY PREVIOUS TO THIS, then you are fine sir.... You may need a new Transmission "VALVE BODY", which controls the shifting and timing of the transmission... an thats a simple computer board with circuits and solenoids....

dont panic yet!!!! its ok, it just wont let you harm it!!!!! DO NOT IGNORE A FLUID LEAK though....

AND USE ONLY MERCEDES TRANSMISSION FLUID....

TAKE CARE:thumbsup:

also remember that the tranny dipstick is 'deleted' from MB's (can't say all) of this age/type. search ebay for a stick--I've got to do tha too. Reasoning was these were 'sealed forever' tranny's. yeah right. search this forum for points in the right direction esp. regarding your leaks. yes the engine can be bullet proof with proper care and maintenance, but the tranny...you'll find a TON of posts on change fluid vs. sealed forever:) how many miles on yours BTW? IMO philly is right...don't sweat it YET. could be old, low, slugded fluid that just won't make the hydraulic baffles anymore. and read this forum on the newest MB Bulletin approved tranny fluids...they change from year to year...sometimes you can go up the scale but then you can't go back.
