I have an R350 and cannot find a trailer hitch as well as the electrical connectors. When I bought the car, the dealer told me that this will be available soon, but he did not tell the truth. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks

Towbar

Where are you? I can recommend a mail order firm in Germany. Just got the OE bar without a Mercedes sticker on it for my ML (164) for half the factory fitted price. They do not list the R yet, but to give you an idea they are now delivering ML bars, 9 months after the German launch.

Hope this helps

Got my towbar in the post yesterday for the ML. Delivery was two working days and all wrapped perfectly. Top company for service.

I really appreciate your link. The problem is that, so far, no one has come up with an electrical kit which works with the R. I left them a message to see if they have one - I'll let you know.

Again, thank's!!

To Tim B.

Thanks for the link to the trailer hitch web site for the R class. I note that it requires some trimming of the underbody plasic or that plastic "skirt" that comes down low on the back of the R class. We are leasing our R class. Do you know if it is a problem with US leasing to put trailer hitch on including trimming plastic.

Like others, we were assured last March by dealer, who was on phone with MB-USA, that a trailer hitch would be available "very soon". I was emphatic that I would not buy the car unless I had absolute assurance that MB would offer it. MB and dealer said it would. I was just up at dealer today and was told that they contacted MB and that nothing was available yet. The dealer's "expert" in this area said he didn't think they ever would.

Unhappy R class Owner if anyone from MB reads this site. chet-ga

Same here, I would have not leased the R either if I would have known that there is no hitch available. I, too, was told by the dealer that one would be available shortly after I signed. I wonder if there is anything we can do. We must have some legal grounds.

WRT the electrical kit, since the R is based on the ML it may have the same electrical architecture; In which case the ML's may fit. Could be worth an ask at the Merc garage.

FYI the supplied kit from kupplung.de had one plug which went into the fuse box and two earth leads to be tightened behind the earth screw. How easy is that....took 5 mins. Then a quick trip to the Merc garage to "energise" the connection on the STAR. I also had to cut the underside of the bumper, but it is not visible.

Well, I finally did it - got myself a Reese hitch and had it installed today. Took about 2 hours because the holes did not line up correctly. I will be in 2 weeks in Germany and will pick up a electrical harness because they have them there for the R class. I hope to finally get there. Glad to be able to use my hitch bike rack again.
