While i had my front end on a jack yesterday having a look around, i noticed (while one of the front wheels was in the air) i could rotate the wheel forwards and backwards about an 1/8th of a turn. the majority of that 'play' was at the transfer case. I could see the shaft turn at the transfer case, then catch. there was also a little of play from the wheel to the CV shaft... but just a fraction.

Anywho, when I press on the gas while taking off, there is a lurch. no matter how easy i press the accelerator, it still does this. Is this jerk because of the play between the wheel and transfer case, or because of the plastic pin in the accelerator pedal has wore out and is sticking (i read about this phenomena here on this board). I thought it was worth asking about before I attempt to replace the pedal.

Thanks in advance for any responses.

Mine is a little like that at the moment. You put your foot down for a second nothing, then off she goes. Bit of a neck jerker. It is also sticky around 30mph. Going to get a new peddle for mine.

I removed the panel underneath the dash board to gain access to the accelerator pedal. This pedal does have a TON of play in it, but it wobbles side to side rather than forwards and backwards... none the less i suppose i will fix this first.

I'm not sure that it is being caused by the pedal. I have that lurch at acceleration - my pedal has been fixed numerous times and that lurch was always there. I don't have that much play in my wheels either though.

It is probably the chain drive in the transfer case. It happens as the chain stretches. It won't hurt anything but sometimse it can be annoying.
It dosn't happen to my ML but it used to be real bad on a Ramcharger I used to own.
