I have a 1979 280E that I bought in Germany in 1984 and imported to use here in the states. It is EPA exempt and only a catolytic converter has been added. When leaded gas was available it had no trouble, but when the leaded was phased out I have had to use 93 octane to keep it from pinging. I heard about retarding the timing a little to stop or slow the pinging, but would like to hear thoughts on this subject. I just moved it from storage on the east coast to the west coast and enjoyed the drive, but had to use boosters which I really do not like to do. I don't take her out much, but when I do I really like to drive her. Any thoughts out there?

Retarding the timing would have been what folks would do back in the old days when the had pinging.
However, where I live it would not pass the Emission tests unless the timing was what Mercedes wanted; because they check the timing.

It is easy enough to put the timing back to the original spot when needed.

There are also Fuel addatives that increase the Octane of Gasoline.
