The 230E has fuel injection. It doesn't have a carburetor.

There was no 230 after 1979. In Aug '79 Mercedes introduced the M102 engines to replace the M115 engines. If it is a 2.0lt, it has a carb; if it is a 2.3lt, it has fuel injection.

Pictures would really help, though.

230 were manufactured until 9/81

The M123 engine however was killed off in 1979

Oops. My bad. Might be regional differences, though.

I'm also contributing to try and sort out this problem:

It's a gray market 230 (non-fuel injected) and it arrived to us without the correct carb installed. What was on the car at purchase was some sort of hack job adapted from what appears to be a GM carb from an unknown source.

Car particulars

Vin: WDB12302312183134
Chassis: W123.023
Engine: M115.954

By the vin some are suggest the car would take the 001-070-5204 carb, but by the engine code it's suggested the 001-070-4804 is correct.

Currently we speculate the Pierburg 175 CDTU is what we need but finding one has proved very difficult to source or to verify even if we got one that it would have all the parts needed to put the fuel preparation systems right again.

Based on the VIN, I was wrong: your car is indeed a 230 and not a 230E.

The carburetor 001-070-5204 was used in Sweden. It's one of the carburetors used with pollution control. Another pollution control carburetor was 001-080-0004. The standard carburetor's most recent number is 001-070-5104.

001-070-4804 is the carburetor used by the 2.0lt M115 engine.

Unable to do a options vin decode for you it keeps saying its wrong on three sites that i looked on .Would think , it could be because its old car, or that the vin is wrong,, are you sure it has no capital letter in there other than WDB?

Title has the same VIN starting with WDB12302312183134. I remember that the previous owner title also has first 3 letters only.
