The SL is an excellent winter car!!

This IS my winter driver, and with Michelin Artic Alpin tires and traction control, coupled with the 4300 LB curb weight, the Sls are excellent winter cars! My 91 SL will out-accelerate my wife's 2000 Chevy Silverado 4x4 on glare ice from a dead stop, turn tighter corners on ice, and will plow through drifts that will swamp the truck! If anyone is considering driving an SL in the wintertime 1) put your hardtop on and leave the rollbar up, 2) mount some winter wheels and tires. The low center of gravity of the SL also makes this car a MUCH safer choice than ANY 4x4 SUV....I much prefer this SL with the winter setup to my Range Rover anytime a snowstorm is brewing!

Your car is really good looking. I have a similar model/year but keep it tucked in for the winter as we use salt on the roads here in Scandinavia. What is your opinion on the R129 vs. rust/corrosion?

Another question, when I store the car during winter, I keep the hood up as I have the notion it is better than leaving it folded for extended periods.

Your comments greatly appreciated.

Best regards

Walther

Get rid of the AMG on the trunk would make it even "cleaner"! [:D]
Yeeouch!

Mine has the same badge. It came with the car.

What's the problem?

AMG bodywork. AMG wheels. 500 HP Kleeman supercharged engine (in two weeks anyway).

Benz4Dirt&Sky: your AMG badge was tacked on too! yeeouch

NO SL 500s came with AMG badging, the ONLY R129 to come from the factory with AMG badging was the ultra-rare SL 55 AMG, check production statistics... I have mint AMG 3-pc. wheels in winter storage for this car. My 97 SL 500 is my summer driver, has sport package and 18 in. AMG wheels as well. One of my businesses is a dealership specializing in used Mercedes and Porsche, I have only come across ONE true R129 AMG SL 55 in the last five years, and I usually have a few SLs in inventory. Maybe I can get you out of that soccer-mom ML and into a G500! Just kidding. Visit my website:

Yikes! I am a poser. Oh well. If I really get 675 foot pounds of torque, I don't care. I may remove the badge though. I never opted for the Dinan deck badge I "earned" for my M3.

I see lots of Jeeps and Rovers where I drive my ML. Land Cruisers and even Broncos. Heck, Suzukis.

Never seen a G. They may be more "capable" offroad, but they always seem to be thumpin' with spinners...onroad.

My girls don't play soccer and their Mom doesn't like the 20 inches of rocker clearance my ML sports. hehe

I will check out your site. Thanks.[:D]

Benz4Dirt&Sky: AMG emblem banished

Hi again! That emblem always bothered me; the previous owner (dis)graced the decklid with it, but I figured it went well with the AMG wheels, but with the stock winter set on, that AMG badge did sort of stick out like a tricycle with mudflaps. Your post solidified this fact, so this afternoon, armed with some dental floss and soapy water, badge-b-gone. Fill me in on your Kleeman boost project, the M119 motor is nearly bulletproof, and should take to pressurizing well, then you can swap the AMG badge for a Kleeman! I have added an HPS supercharger to a base model 99 Boxster, which was a simple project except for ECU recalibration, but the SL project is far more interesting to me. Are you doing the work yourself? Post pics of the project on the forum as it unfolds, if you have a good experience I will boost my '97. it would be fun to go hunting for C5 Corvettes with the top down on a nice summer morning... Walther: SLs are rustproofed well

Hi Walther,

Your SL is nice, we do not have that shade of blue here in the U.S. We have salt on the roads here in WI as well, but I wash the 91 three times a week during the winter months. This car has been driven EVERY winter since new. There is only one problem spot for corrosion on the R129 body, around the rear taillights and licence plate valence, as well as the metal panels directly underneath the headlights where the headlight wiper arms are mounted. My 91 is rust-free, but I have bought and sold other 90-95 SLs where these areas had one or two tiny rust bubbling spots. Besides washing the car frequently during winter months, frequent use of a Carnauba-based wax like Zymol is your best defense, also get minor paint chips corrected ASAP, before corrosion sets in. Summer is just around the corner! Is the SL rare in Scandinavia? There are quite a few in southern WI, being close to Chicago.
Regards,
Tom

Not entire true. The SL that´s counts as AMG, is the cars tune by AMG and sold by MB. That is three of them. The SL55 with the new V8 engine, the SL60 with M119 engine and SL73 (V12). Thats the only true R129 AMGs from Mercedes that come with the AMG badge.

I am having a shop in Southern California do the work. Their name gets deleted on this forum- which is funny, because I can't find anyone among our sponsors who can do a CARB legal SC on my car.

Here is the Kleeman site:

http://www.kleemann.dk/site/D73BB20B-EDF9-4B53-8260-FBAD205206BF.htm

The torque number is in NM...not ft pounds....so when I said 675 ft pounds.....LOL...not quite.

Should be interesting.

Hello Tom.

Thank you very much for your kind advice. I must say that my previous intentions of having my SL tucked in for the winter are hard on my patience, winters are long here and I sure miss driving it. I may take your advice and buy some winter tires next winter and run her like you do.

Do you wash the car in a carwash and how do you apply the wax you mentioned?

Best regrds

Walther

No offend but AMG never made SL500 [:p]. New owners seem to like that ///AMG alot but after some time, they will take it off.

And btw, please let me know how the Kleemann SC works, will ya? thanks. I've heard they can get up to 500 HPs for $11 G's plus installation. I called them but the nearest shop would be like 3 hours away. [:(]
