Picked this one up today. This makes W140 #3. Very unique example as it is one of the very few W140s made with the indestructible OM606 turbodiesel which is widely considered the 2JZ motor of the diesel side of things and it has the nearly bulletproof 722.6 5 speed gearbox.

This one is 7525 out of 7583 produced, and was built in the very last month of W140 production for the Euro market. No evaporator issues to worry about, no eco junk wiring to worry about.

Only has about 16K miles, which is really low for a 1998 model car and the car i.e. its interior shows it. It feels like new, it drives like new, it smells like new and everything works. Bought it from the original owner, and has all paperwork from day 1. It even has the very rare (for 1998) factory GPS system.

The only downside? The car has been sitting for nearly 15 years and the fuel has gotten contaminated most likely with algae as the car cut out as soon as I left. Got it started again eventually but felt completely low on power and then cut out again on the freeway. The car felt completely gutless. Filled up at the nearest station, and things improved immediately and by the time I got it with its other W140 stablemates she was singing really nicely. It will need a full revision/overhaul of the fuel system including pulling the tank, but that makes for a nice little project. Here are a few pix

Great find. Cool plates. Is it from Yugoslavia? Did you ship it to the states yourself or was it already here? 98 means it'll have to be smogged in California. I wonder how difficult that will be

Yugoslavia??? Yugoslavia stopped existing as a country in 1991. World events and geography are not America's strong suit.

Which reminds me, I still have a unopened bottle of cold war era Yugoslav vodka sitting around. Probably a good time to put it in the freezer in case the rona virus pulls my card.

Nope, car and myself are residing in Europe (Belgium) for the time being.

The plates shown are the old pre EU era plates. They were removed yesterday prior to me taking ownership since the previous owner is required by law to surrender the old plates.

@lowesguy,

Johnnyboy,

You crack me up. This is far from my 1st rodeo with MB. I'd already ordered parts before I went to pick up the car.

All the fuel lines have already been ordered, along with the fuel tank strainer, main fuel feed line, fuel heater strainer (prefilter) and a bunch of main filters. Ditto on all the other filters.

Also 2nd item on the list is tackling the cooling system. The car runs perfectly @ 80C, but due to the age and 15 years of standstill, it is getting a citric acid flush (something YOU should have done recently) regardless since the old G5 coolant is still in there. It is getting G48 since a new radiator and every other rubber hose is getting replaced with new genuine MB parts.

And there is a crateful of Liqui Moly oils and additives on the way too already.

I don't think I've EVER seen a 140 turbo diesel in the US. I don't doubt they're around, I've just never seen one.

All the W140 turbodiesels sold in the US is with the troublesome 3.5L OM603 "rodbender" motor. Wouldn't touch one with a 10ft. pole.

I had two matching W126 turbodiesels (300SD) back in the day and those things were absolute beasts. One had 395K on the clock when I sold them and I had never had a repair on either that took more than a day to address. I bought both of the cars brand new as well.

Sorry to hear the quality went down.

Very nice Steve. Good luck with it.

Did you sell that sweet 123 you had found? Just curious.

No, but gotten countless offers from people wanting to buy it. It's probably going to stay, even though it is not the motorisation I would have wanted.

Yeah, I had a 1984 300SD (OM617 5 cylinder turbo) as well. The last good year of bulletproof reliablilty before dark clouds appeared, such as the oxidizer trap.

Better yet, this 300SD has no electric sunroof. It's a slicktop, and has probably enough headroom for Abe Lincoln to wear his tallest hat.

Mine were both '83s.

Keep it, keep it, keep it. Put it in the living room if you have to.
