Bought this unusual shape AMG muffler the other day
Its a lot flatter that the usual box style seabrings Ive seen and it has a massive single inlet
Its definitely the real deal I know of the car it came off and its circa 1983 and has the correct pre merger logos on the tips

For now it will sit in my garage next to the AMG w116 chin spoiler Im saving to build a w116 AMG rep if I find some cool rims that allow me to liberate the pentas from my SEC

I have one similar to that except the actual muffler is a little bit bigger than the one you have.
Haven't seen an Amg version that small.. Any markings?

Looks like the tips were cut off another box and welded onto this one.

Well the tips are certainly legit. I know the W201 AMG Sebrings had a single inlet pipe as opposed to the dual inlet pipes on the W126/R107/W124 units. Nice purchase.

Are there stampings on the oval box from Sebring? If not, these tips may have been grafted onto a donor box - no harm as the original boxes from Sebring are made from steel that rusted easily. I just scored the below W126 Gen II Sebring from Japan and had it refinished last week. The AMG Sebrings are getting almost impossible to find any longer.

Where did you have it refinished if you don't mind me asking? What did you specify?

A local Atlanta powder coating shop. They sand blasted it first (after I spent a few hours restoring the tips) and then powder coated it with high-temp ceramic powder and baked it in the PC oven at about 600 degrees F. Cost $150 to refinish. The sand blasting will turn up any rust flaws in the box - a few small pinholes. Actually, I prefer to have a couple pinholes in the bottom to allow any exhaust condensation to drip out instead of rotting the inside of the box.

Yeah the tips look great. What did you do for restoration on them? Were they rechromed?

Nope - I scraped the crud off with a razor blade all the way back to the box and then used my cordless drill and some good metal polish with a foam cone applicator. Here is a pre-restoration pic of the tips. There is a small section of chrome plating that peeled off on the bottom. Can't see it. I wish AMG had left the tips bare stainless steel!

I got really lucky finding this Sebring - the Seller listed it as a W210 AMG exhaust.

Agreed. I was thinking the same thing, and it doesn't look like my AMG box at all.

Good score Al! I know you have been searching for one for years.

I did the same thing to my box as Al did to his.

I took the tips off and had them straightened and re-chromed by a shop here in LA.

The box rehab was I think $150, and another $150 for the tips. Chip at D&D here did the rehab. He cut open the can and inspected it for rust, and there was none.

Box came from a well known 5.4 wide body with a full check list of AMG mods and I have no reason to believe it wasnt supplied at the same time as the other mods
The interesting thing is the big single inlet which is obviously something different to the usual seabring set ups
I agree its possible that it was a replacement for a rusted seabring but then why alter the entire set up to accommodate the single inlet
I recon the owner speced his own box / exhaust set up when ordering the conversion its a very free flowing, ie loud, design or perhaps it was simply alternative option offered by the agent that did the conversion :)

You can see inside the tips arent cut and grafted on although the chrome garnishes are obviously separate components

Anything was possible back then. Good score in any event. What did you pay for it if you don't mind me asking?

I won it on trade me (NZs ebay) for the princely sum of one dollar
He had it listed at $1 resurve under performance exhausts instead of mercedes parts so I guess no one saw it
I felt like a bit of a tool getting it so cheap
the poor guy had it in a lock up and had to take time and gas to meet me to, for all intents and purposes ,give away this cool item
He was totally sweet about though lol

Great story! These AMG treasures are out there and are found in the most unusual places. Similar to the Aussie gent who found the five spoke widebody wheels a couple years back at a wheel shop and got them for cheap. Also similar to my Sebring, above, that was listed as a W210 exhaust. You just never know! Sometimes it's luck and sometimes its the result of hours of searching under unlikely rocks.

Yeah I hear you but then you run the risk of insulting them
How much more do you give without looking condescending
I sell stuff too cheap on occasion and just wear it ,its swings and roundabouts I guess
