Yeah, we both thought that was Captain Kirk in the avatar, but now we realize it's Captain Seat!

Thanks for the info, Schweinhund. I hope that the copyright vultures don't delete the posts.

Done, seat sensor.

Weeeeelll, I wasnt thrilled with the idea of taking apart the seat and replacing the sensor myself. As my work vehicle I need it to run Mon-Fri. with no doubts. And we all know what happens when one starts an unknown project. So I followed this thread for many months. Always with a eye to finding a simpler was. But with out paying $5-600.00 US to get the job done. And that was at my off-Benz mechanic.
So the other day while at a body shop I enquired if he know of anyone who specialized in this work.
The proper term seems to be: SEAT SENSOR
And yes he did give me the name of a mobile company who did the work for MB dealers and body shops.
The fellow had me order the part from MB. $200. later he he and the part show up in my driveway (seperately).
It was the wrong part, this despite that I ordered it with the VIN number in hand.
Back to MB. This time I am in the wholesale parts dept. $350. later I have a totally different module of which my seat has four, one in each corner of the front passenger seat. As well as a master module. Heaven only knows how much all of it would have cost. Or should I say hell.
$350.+225.00 install=$575.00 happy camper. Glad I did it. Glad I did it this way. Good luck to you all. And my thanks to Mr. Smith otherwise I would have never started at all. Hmmmm.

Much obiged,

Jeffinski

Another seat sensor failure... FIXED

Thanks to mrbsmith and others contributing to this thread. I don't have anything really significant to add, other than that I did not have continuity issues in the harness wiring. I ohmed out the wires between connector and as far back as I could go on the harness (without actually removing the sensor mat), and everything seemed fine. Just to make sure (before spending money), I cut out a large section of the wiring and replaced it (where it might have gotten pinched, making intermittent contact), but still no luck.

So, I ordered the part, pulled the passenger seat back out, replaced the whole sensor mat per the DIY procedure (which is not much fun if you have the pneumatic seats), shampooed all the spilled coffee & soda out of the carpet underneath the seat, and put everything back together. Worst part for me was managing the plastic clips. $120 later, no more SRS light!

Main point -- mine was not harness wiring, it was the actual sensor assembly that had failed.

Photo of SRS Pad for Early W210 Cars -- it's different!

Hey folks -- just wanted to post this photo of the SRS sensor pad that is used on some early W210 models. It is part number A 2108207810.

In North America, the EPC says it is used on chassis codes 210.020 (E300D) 210.055 (E320) 210.072 (E420 and E50 AMG). Most likely, it is only used on the very earliest years of the W210 (1996 and 1997) and maybe some later years.

If you have a prefacelift car (99 or earlier) make sure you ask your dealer for the right part with your VIN or check for the right part yourself in the EPC. You can also possibly tell by looking at the connections on the bottom front of your passenger seat. If you don't see a yellow connector as in the photos in the steps of this DIY, then you probably need this part.

Also, if you don't have a switch/light for the airbag next to your shifter, then you probably don't have a yellow connector and you probably do need this part.

Color coded plugs... yes

Some of the early usa 210's had the old sensor from the 124 testbed, these are res and will not talk to the srs computer in a nice enough way to b used.

The yellow plug is the most common and is what we used.

GOOD CALL Tallguy when dealing with 'jesus parts' we must be very carefull with parts and craftmanship.

Use a multi-meter first

Hey all,

First off thanks for this great thread.

Before you go out and buy the sensor just try and check the condition of the lead 3 wire from the sensor. I removed the front part of the seat cover but left the back still on - while I tested. My brown wire had a fault and it was in a tricky spot. Past where the zip tie that lashes the wire to the seat frame - but just before the hole in the seat mesh / seat bottom. From the naked eye it looked fine - but it had broken - so test. I know I almost gave up but thought as long as I am in here.

I used a razor blade to carefully cut away the protective sheathing that covers all three wires and then used the blade again to carefully expose a small amount of wire to check for any loss in continuity. First I checked the white and it was fine then brown and it was the culprit.

Some tight spot soldering but in the end that did the trick and the light is off. There is no resetting or doing anything else - all good now. Ohh I did put protective tape on the metal hole where the line was cut and also put some sheathing on the brown and then the 3 wire.

It took me an hour and a half and I would not consider myself a mechanic - fairly handy with some tools but that's it.

Cheers,

Eric

Hello,

Great thread. Planning to tackle this job (as confirmed by my tech guy on STAR) on the passenger seat. Does anyone have experience having done this on W211 vehicles?

I'm really hoping for a wire/connectivity fault vs. replacing the sensor (local MB dealer just quoted me $318!)

Is the procedure essentially the same since this model is just one year newer?

thanks
