I have transferred ~35GB of MP3s to 6 Phillips Dual Layer DVD +R disks. Dual Layer disks gave me the extra capacity of ~8GB per disk. They play perfectly and the audio quality is fine for me. The only time the interface is slow is when I change between disks. I have the music organized alphabetically by artist and album and named the disks A-F, G-L etc. I can list all the artists, and then all the albums and then the songs.
I tried this as an experiment before I purchased a PCMCIA adapter and CF card, but I decided it was quite good enough. Now the only reason I might consider the memory card option is to have a selection of favorites, or for newly added music, though I left a little space on each DVD so I can burn a replacement with a few extra albums in the future and not spoil the disk labels.
I don't believe the data transfer rates for playing are demanding at all, so memory cards that have 30MB/s, or 60 or 90, are overkill and quite an extra expense. And, unlike photos where you never want to lose any because of a dead memory card, the data most likely has a duplicate copy in other locations. I would probably get a low speed, lower cost card, but still use a reliable brand, like Sandisk, unless you need to minimize the cost, when Transcend looks good.
I have heard that there is a limit on the number of files or folders supported on a memory card, so I am not sure if a 32MB card will actually play all 32MB of music. can someone report on that?
