PCMCIA card adaptor.

So i finally got some time off and went out to buy a PCMCIA 6-in-1 adaptor. Bought an XD 1 GB flash card to use with it and the new car. Is there something special we're supposed to do to make this work?

I've heard only MP3 format works, so that's all I put on. I was able to navigate through the folders and stuff, but I couldn't actually play any of the music. Any suggestions??

Has anybody gotten this to work?

I have transferred ~35GB of MP3s to 6 Phillips Dual Layer DVD +R disks. Dual Layer disks gave me the extra capacity of ~8GB per disk. They play perfectly and the audio quality is fine for me. The only time the interface is slow is when I change between disks. I have the music organized alphabetically by artist and album and named the disks A-F, G-L etc. I can list all the artists, and then all the albums and then the songs.

I tried this as an experiment before I purchased a PCMCIA adapter and CF card, but I decided it was quite good enough. Now the only reason I might consider the memory card option is to have a selection of favorites, or for newly added music, though I left a little space on each DVD so I can burn a replacement with a few extra albums in the future and not spoil the disk labels.

I don't believe the data transfer rates for playing are demanding at all, so memory cards that have 30MB/s, or 60 or 90, are overkill and quite an extra expense. And, unlike photos where you never want to lose any because of a dead memory card, the data most likely has a duplicate copy in other locations. I would probably get a low speed, lower cost card, but still use a reliable brand, like Sandisk, unless you need to minimize the cost, when Transcend looks good.

I have heard that there is a limit on the number of files or folders supported on a memory card, so I am not sure if a 32MB card will actually play all 32MB of music. can someone report on that?

how exactly is this supposed to work. I bought a 5in1 adapter and a 4gb sd card. its formatted to FAT32.
I copied mp3 files directly onto the card, but when i inserted it in the car...it said 'no mp3'.

is there a certain way that you are supposed to copy mp3 files onto the card??

I've just read a comment that the older 221's can only deal with cards under 1gb. do you think that could be the problem that my card is over 1gb?

Where did you read older 221 cars only supporting 1 GB cards? The most likely reason for the failure is your adapter, some PCMCIA adapters do not support SD HC cards and your 4 GB card is most likely an SD HC card (there are some SD cards at 4 GB size but I've never seen one myself).

Another option would be that your MP3 files are not MP3 but AAC or something else, or the MP3 parameters are not compatible (very unlikely).

mrautopart stated the above about the memory card size, on page 4 of this thread.

I found the comment now. Typical bullshit from an MB dealer, you can find that proven wrong at this thread and at many others.
@ Diesel Benz; you could be right about the SD-HC card. i managed to buy an 'old school' basic SD card today - 1gb. I'm going to try it out in the car tomorrow. will post results.
if this fails, i think i'm just going to burn mp3's on a cd / dvd and leave it at that!!

Plz let me know because I have the same issue here. I have a PCMCIA card adaptor and it says on it that it reads up to 4 GB and it supports SD cards. So, I dont know what my problem is?

Thanks
Recently bought an adapter on ebay and an 8gb card from Best Buy. Works fine with no problems

If you have any problems, it must be because you don't use SD cards. Your adapter accepts SD cards that usually are maximum 2GB, certain rare cards are 4GB. Which memory card have you tried with your adapter? Was it an SD HC card?

danodano just posted a link for a "good" adapter. Of course your adapter is good too if you only use SD cards (typically 2 GB or less).
