I've now downloaded the Model 126 file from Steve Nervig's page. (Thanks MBL for the link, and Teutone for helping get it!) Now I have on my hard drive the file W126, and within it subfolders "Main", "Index", and "w126CD1", and "w126CD2".

Following the readme guide, I then inserted disk 1 of my MB Service Manual CD, hoping to start the process by copying the "program" file on it to the w126CD1 file. However, there's no "program" file on CD1. Furthermore, there's no option in the templates either to create a new "program" folder within w126CD1.

What have I done wrong? Is one meant to copy the 2 CDs to our hard drive first (using Nero, for example), and then insert disk 1, followed by disk 2? Is that why I can't yet see the folder named "Program" on CD1 or CD2, so that I can't drag it onto w126CD1 and w126CD2? Or is the prob that my browser is starting the CDs with Internet Explorer instead of Netscape or Mozilla?

umm.. did the file you downloaded com with image files or iso? most likely you need to burn each cd downloaded to a blank. then insert the burnt ones in order and run whatever is on them. What is on this cd? can i have a link to this file please?

These CDs are the "Service Manual Library". (2 CDs from MB USA.)

I don't think the files from Steve Nervig which I downloaded came with any ISO or image files. How does that make a difference?

I have a PC question -- why do you have to burn these CDs to blanks? (I thought they should be burnt to the hard drive only -- at least, that's what the guide tells us.)

Thanks for the noobie guide. However, this noob has already come across a few difficulties. Everything worked for me up to step 4, but from there on, not a clue how to do it. With which program are you copying the files? How should I drag the files to w126CD1? And are you first selecting your model from CD1? And are you using Mozilla or Netscape as your browser? -- cos my PC automatically starts with Explorer, and I don't know if that's the prob. Even if I do use Netscape as my browser, I get this message that I need additional plug-ins, and when I search for these, I get the message "no plug-ins found". What the heck should I do?

I hear your frustration! That said, I find it difficult to understand why you guys are having such difficulties installing the index and then dragging the files off each CD and into the proper folders within that index.

After you expand Steve's index & place it, you'll find 2 read-me's, one a PDF & the other a Word Doc. The instructions are very direct and very accurate. Make your installation a clone of his pictures.

Once you have the index installed, pop in an MB CD, double click it. It should just open as a window - displaying the contents within. See example below. Then just drag the Program folder on the CD into the appropriate w126CDx folder within the index.

**Note** I use Mac OS X, so when I drag that folder off the CD and the w126CDx folder highlights, the files automagically copy to that folder in the index. I don't know if Gates & Company would allow life to be so easy for you Windows users, so your mileage may vary. I'm just saying I'm ignorant of the Windows way of doing things, it probably will copy, but check anyway.

BTW: If done properly, you can expect the w126CD1 > program (folder) = 562.2 MB and w126CD2 > program (folder) 557.2 MB respectively.

Explorer has issues with .PDFs. so use another browser. Firefox is great for this.
If you still have difficulties with the pdfs, change your browser default to Firefox/Mozilla, just try it.

Thanks for trying to help. I just downloaded Mozilla/Firefox, but the browser was missing plug-ins. So I downloaded Micromedia Flash (as requested). However, with Mozilla, I'm still unable to drag any files into the w126CD1 folder. With Netscape as a browser, I can't find any suitable missing plug-ins. And IE is crap as we know, wrt using the PDFs from the CDs. My guess is that my platform, which is Windows XP, is screwing up the operation of other browsers which I care to download and use other than IE.

I really wish I had the Mac OS platform now (which, it seems, works flawlessly with Mozilla)....then, like you, the programs file would be visible from the CD, and then I could drag the program files directly to w126CD1 and w126CD2 directly. No fuss. No prob. I'm really beginning to despise Microsoft. I wonder how on earth I'm ever gonna be able to use the supplemental service index of Steve's. It looks really good, and the MB CDs are so lacking in depth.

Microsoft sucks. Rant over.

I never could get my Service Manual CD's to ever work with IE and XP Pro w/ SP2, but I wasn't willing to change my internet browser. Well, today I decided that it was time to make a change. Still running XP Pro, I downloaded and changed my browser to "Netscape 8.0". I followed the directions, and moved the "Program" folder from each cd to the appropriate W126CD folder. It worked great. Now, I can access the information on the MB Service Manual CD's.

To transfer in program folder from the CD to the W126 Disk folder that Steve's program creates on your harddrive try using "Windows Explorer", it is an easy way to do it. Don't expand the program folder to display the contents. Just drag and drop.

I don't have much to add to MBL87560SEC. I have windows XP and we used mozilla/firefox to install the index and the mbusa CD's. Used 'end it all' for the WIS/ASRA. The EPC,s were easier. Teutone (aka Horst K)

Hi RS,

Fellow member bse500sel reminded me of something in mentioning Windows Explorer.

RS, you've been mentioning difficulties with the browsers, plug-ns, etc. while attempting to install the index.

The browser acts as the portal through which to view/work with the index and the w126CD1 & 2 files previously installed on your hard drive. The browser is not used for any part of the installation process.

Please correct me if I got the wrong impression, but it appears as though a web browser was somehow being used as a tool in the install.......... ?
