Can I drive into Canada without a passport? I've got a birth certificate and a photo drivers license but my passport has expired. We were planning on a loop around Lake Ontario and reenter US at Niagara. Do we need an alternate route?

A US citizen can enter Canada without a passport BUT you won't be admitted back to the US without a passport.

When my wife went to Montreal in July they asked for passport in and out of Canada. Not saying this is always the case but I know for a fact that you can no longer do it with just a drivers license.

Ive come back from canada to detroit last year, but not without hassle. I had to play the dumb american card when they asked me why they should believe im American. I was like 'I dont speak Canadian!' After they looked at eachother for a few seconds, they let me pass.

Never again...

At the time I lived in Michigan, so I ordered an enhanced driver's license which permits you to and from Canada, Mexico and the Virgin Islands without a passport. If I Remember rightm, it only cost 20 bucks more and it took 2 weeks to get to me. Looks pretty nifty too! I wish California had an enhanced one.... Oh well... Good thing I saved my Michigan ID!

you need a passport in/out of Canada and in/out of the USA. you can very rarely work it, though that is a risk.

Quote from the CBSA website:

"Non-Canadians
When you enter Canada, a CBSA officer may ask to see your passport and a valid visa, if one is necessary. If you are a citizen of the United States, you do not need a passport to enter Canada. However, you should carry proof of your citizenship, such as a birth certificate, certificate of citizenship or naturalization, as well as photo identification. If you are a permanent resident of Canada or the U.S, you should bring your Permanent Resident Card with you."

Hi Bristol:

NO, you do NOT need a passport to enter into Canada or re-enter the USA.

You DO NEED a NEXUS Card, which is good only for travel by Land (car) and Marine (boat).

The NEXUS Card was set up by a joint agreement between Canada and the USA, only. :D

There is a $50 fee for the NEXUS Card, and it is valid for 5 years. If you are under 18 years old, the fee is waived.

You can apply for your NEXUS Card online.

One benefit of the NEXUS Card, is that you are processed more quickly through the border via the specially-marked NEXUS lanes.

Here is the Link if you would like more information on NEXUS.

Travel often? Apply for NEXUS - Official Web site

Hope the above helps.

God Bless, Arctic

The nexus card is overkill for the infrequent traveler. Also the initial application process according to CBSA website "The application process to determine eligibility takes approximately six to eight weeks." and you have to appear at an interview center for fingerprints, photograph, and iris scan.

I did mine a while back after being detained at the border for 4 hours on a road trip - but that's another story… The NEXUS process wasn't that bad and the turn around time was less than 4 weeks. I set up my interview for a later date when I knew I would be at an airport that had a NEXUS office. The interview took all of 15 minutes, including prints and iris scan. I was able to register my vehicles with them as well. It may take longer now that more people are finding out about it. My last trip to Montreal had more people in the NEXUS line than in the regular "tourist" line. ymmv
If you have a Plat AmEx, they will pick up the fees.

Tail of the Dragon

oh my GOD, never drove anything like it in my life. 300+ hair pin curves in 10 miles. Pity it was in the Caddy and not the SL. I do not even think about it on the Goldwing. In general, the roads in Tenn. , N.C. Are so of the best twisties I've driven. We are on the Blue Ridge Parkway now and heading back. The weather at the Great Lakes is getting too cold for that leg. Next time maybe.

When I was living in Montreal crossing the border was look and go...
Was the same for Mexico.

Those were the days....

A while a go I went to pick my son from LAX,
I was alone in the SEL/ Hydraulic suspension, in the airport the cops stop me..
(No I did not piss my pants.)

So I open the trunk, was empty, a few tools.
I asked why did he suspect/stop me?

He started laughing...
Then he said it was, because the rear was kind a low. Lol.

Regards,
aam.

Passport

My wife is German and I am Canadian. She has to go to US immigration to get finger printed and sign documents that she was not involved in the Holocaust etc every time she enters the US from Canada.
Last winter we were going by car to go skiing in NY state and we had to go out of the car to US immigration. There was an American woman there with her daughter that tried to enter Canada. Canada would not let her in and she was returned to the US.
The Americans were giving her a hard time and would not let her into the US because she had no passport just a drivers license.

Traveler beware. You need a passport or enhanced drivers license especially returning to the US

Last time I drove to Canada - Alberta - 2006 - I think all they wanted was my driver's license. Pretty nuts about your wife - you'd think they'd have her on file so she didn't have to go though that each time.

BTW enjoyed the article on your 280SL Doug
