I just got my Vosa/ Dsa post and it has the new testing requirements for diesels.

I then received this posting from "Motoring" and decided to post it for you...

the particulate filter is NOT a suggestion.... it is FACT.....

although it points out that this is the PARTICULATE filter NOT the cat.. I must point out that the CAT will be added to the MOT fairly soon..... the wording being ANY ALTERATION of the exhaust system will fail an MOT but before they changed department, VOSA made it clear that it would NOT affect aftermarket exhausts (stainless etc) PROVIDED that a fully functioning CAT, Particulate and Silencer were present.... but added that items that increase emissions and / or sound levels, from the published VEHICLE MANUFACTURERS specifications WOULD FAIL and in a controlled zone would be prosecutable (fraud) for breach of the control order eg London LEZ

For a minute there I misread that as Pollen filter and not particulate filter.

It is no surprise at all that the particulate filter is part of the MOT. What would be the point in forcing all manufacturers down the road of fitting them only for the owners to remove them.

What I am wondering is when they will begin to enforce testing on off highway vehicles (ie agricultural vehicles) which drive on the road anyway. They now all have to have some either SCR or DPF technology at point of sale but there is currently nobody checking up on them on the road. Admittedly VOSA could, and the manufacturers have been pretty canny about vehicles de-rating if they are tampered with but it will not be long before people are selling aftermarket fiddles for them

vehicles classed and registered as Agricultural Vehicles (look at the tax disc) are limited to a handful of road miles per year (field to field) are exempt from most regs

those that are taxed for road use are liable to the same rules as everybody else

but as you say... they are rarely checked UNLESS something goes wrong e.g an accident.

I can't understand why particulates are mandatory before cats (we are talking diesels here) except that a load of regs were pushed through by france and germany in a swathe of petty regs..... some will always get through.

its interesting that particulate regulation applies to all fuel types wheras most regs are diesel OR petrol

remember trailers over 750kg and caravans will be subject to mot in a couple of years..... when I first posted that one, everybody laughed........ we'll just have to see if vosa (now defunct) won and its every 3yrs not every year

UPDATE

Starting in february 2014.... ANY vehicle that originally had or was specified with a particulate filter... WILL AUTOMATICALLY FAIL if it is damaged or missing or not working properly

ANY vehicle STOPPED in a roadside check and found to be missing a specified particulate filter will EITHER be issued with a CONFORMITY notice (get it fixed within so many days and present for testing OR the vehicle will be impounded and only released to an authorised repairer for repair / replacement.

the Police tend to favour impounding, VoSA tend to issue conformity notices.

it is expected that cats will follow the same route in a couple of years time.

thanks a bunch #***###s
