It seems like my parking brake cable is not connected at the pedal. Does someone have the exploded diagram so I can figure out how to connect it and what panels I need to remove. I can see that it is still connected to the release handle in the dash.
Thanks

Looking at the WIS for your model, it seems that slackness at the pedal could be caused by more than 1 cable. See drawing below for details.

Cable 79 is from Parking Brake handle (77) to Pedal (71). You say this is OK.

Cable 85 is from Pedal (71) to Shackle (91) (or Intermediate Lever) under the car.

Also there are Cables 86 from the Slack Adjuster (92) (or Equalizer Lever) by the Shackle, to the Retaining plate (84) for each rear brake.
N.B.This is shown on the drawing as Cable 88 in error. The text refers to cable 86.

Chances are that your cable 85 has one end broken. You may be able to replace this from under the car, without removing interior panels.

Thanks,
I know it is the inside cable because I can pull it way out of the slot and the release handle comes out of the slot with the cable attached. I hope it is just disconnected, I can't pull it all the way out, which makes me think the other end of the cable still has the end on it, but is disconnected from the assembly. It looks like a bear to expose the mechanism from those photos.

Are you intending to DIY? It looks like a real pita... working under the steering wheel on your back...

If so, I will add the text part of those drawings above. Bear in mind that the procedure will be: (assuming the the pedal can stay in place)

To replace the cable. do a) to d). To simply reconnect bottom end, ignore b) & d).

a) Remove the cover below the Inst. Panel
b) Remove 77a
c) Remove cable 79 from 77
d) Unclip cable 79 from 71. Note. A special tool is required to do this. Dimensions are provided in the WIS to enable you to fabricate this in a workshop. Maybe with ingenuity you can manage without the tool. :)

I now have a similar problem on a 2003 S430, and have some dummy questions.

How do I remove the panels under the dash? Lots of looking, tugging and removing fasteners hasn't helped so far.

How do I remove the kick panel?

I know that these seem easy to do once you know the secrets, but I don't want to break panels, tabs, etc.

Thanks!

I actually brought it back to where I bought the car from and the dealer fixed it for me, I also gave up on the inner panels so i cant give you any hints. From prevous work on my W210 you have to be carefull and take your time to prevent breaking parts. The diagrams above are helpful, mine required a new cable.

Thought I would resurrect this thread since I'm having similar problems but the repair doesn't look to be exactly the same...

On my 2003 S430, the parking brake release handle sticks out of the dash about 2"-3". It's clear that it doesn't connect to anything, and upon close inspection of the parking brake mechanism itself, there are related issues, I believe.

The detent (#25) is clearly broken on my parking brake, which prevents it from latching should you push it down with your foot. If you attempt to do this, it just returns to the released position.

I have to believe that the release cable must connect to the detent somehow in order to release the parking brake when the release handle is pulled. That being said, there is no sign of the end of the release cable when I look at the parking brake assembly on my car. I can only suspect that it's up in there somewhere, despite no sign of it, even when I push the release handle in all the way.

I would add that I have confirmed that the release cable is properly connected to the handle, too.

What's troubling is that this detent appears to be a weak spot in the design, as it's clearly plastic and not terribly substantial from the looks of the remains of mine. That and the online EPCs suggest that the part is NLA (no longer available.)

I'll be checking with my dealer parts guy on Monday to find out if this is the case, and will report back here.

Meantime, if anyone has ventured into this area and had success with replacing the detent and connecting the release cable I would be most appreciative if you share your experience....

Dan

I have my Monday morning "shopping list" from the EPC that I text to my dealer parts guy, and it includes the detent and related parts. Heh. He texts me Monday afternoon if he hasn't gotten a parts order from me on a weekly basis....

I'll report back tomorrow what I hear from him. I would be stunned if this part was truly no longer available.

My parts guy verified that the parts 15, 25 and 30, the pin, detent and spring, were all good numbers and available through the MBUSA parts system. I had him place them on a stock order, which means they'll arrive late this week.

The cost was pretty much pocket change. I had one other hardware item with these and the total was $6.

Once I get the parts in hand I'll be able to tell if there is a place for the cable to connect to the detent, as I suspect there might be...

hi.
wanted to know if you did this repair and replaced #25 detent with pedal assembly mounted in the car or out of the car on a bench? thank you

Well it appears this thread is dead, but I have the exact same problem and trying to run the solution down. My problem is just like LWB250 described.

My car is the 2001 S500.

Have the similar problem on my 2001 W220. Can you share your experience how you resolved it, what parts you had to replace, what panels had to be removed ? Feedback greatly appreciated.

Sorry, I should have finished this thread. Turns out they built the mechanism backwards (mirror image). You need to find the recall TSB? and get the part, I found mine on ebay. Cable is fine just need to replace the mechanism. I paid $80. Do a search on the recalls for the S500 W220 (mine is 2001).

First picture is BAD one I pulled out, correct one is below.

Thank you so much for the explanations and photos, great help. Yes, mine is a 2001 as well. Let me dive into it and check.

I was surprised that the original owner didn't get it done under warranty. I talked to the last owner and he said never used the parking brake, LOL.
