what would be a typical cost of painting an R170 the same color as it already is. basically just for cosmetic reasons (to look better). meaning no body work just a straight paint over of the same color it is? I got a quote for a lil more the 5k. That seems really high to me am I wrong?

It cost just over $1,000 just to paint the hood, one fender and the blend areas of my '32 after the fiasco last Summer. I would guess that although it seems a bit high, it's not by much........ Paint shops get an arm and a leg for the work they do...............

For a good quality paint job (ie: no visible lines from respray, proper taping, removal of all parts that can be removed and proper prep) with a high quality base coat/clearcoat paint... yes, that is a normal quote.

With paint jobs, be very careful. You get what you pay for (most of the time). And once it's had a bad paint job, it's pretty much over...

Defintely get refrences of their previous work and take a good look at the job they did. I have seen a LOT of bad paint jobs at the car shows I've gone to.

Good luck,
~ Alan

The price is about where it should be.

Make sure you take a tour of the shop and ask about their process. You want to make sure they color sand/wet sand everything. You do not want orange peel, despite the fact the car now comes this way from the factory.

Ok, talking about paint, sorry I can't answer questions about cost and I'm only asking my question cause it looks like you already got your answers(I'm not a hijacker<LOL>)....I bought a paint kit last summer to deal with the pits and dings and a long scratch in my lower right front bumper caused by me pushing my toolbox with the car. The kit has a world of stuff in it, 2, 3 or 4 kinds of sandpaper, thinner, bottled paint, spray....a pretty decent kit. This instructions call for about 20 steps. I didn't get a chance to try it before the winter came but I was thinking of doing one little spot and do all the steps and if it came out nicely, take a sheet, tape to the car and cut the openings for each of the other places and do them in one fell swoop.

I know nothing about painting so any advice will be appreciated!!

$5K is about right if you want it to look like new. Of course, $199 and you can get the Earl Schieb special and be out in one day. I checked out $3,500 paint jobs and they didn't look much better than what Earl can do.

5000 is about right, if you make arangements to do the final color sand and buff yourself you may save 1000 or so, but you better know what youre doing, different colors cost more like red or metallics, also increase the difficulty, ask to see the shops previous work, this is high tech and you can tell the difference!

This thread takes me back to the good old days of acrylic lacquer. I came accross some old photos I had from my DIY painting days. It was fun and very satisfying....14 coats of lacquer, wet sanding the final coat with 600 grit and buffing it out for a nice smooth finish.

On both of these cars, I used a mixture of 50% color and 50% clear lacquer on the final 4 coats.

That's funny, painting a car outdoors on grass under a tree, in FL no less. Didn't insects, leaves, dust land on the fresh paint? You can still paint your own. Just build a temporary spray booth in your garage with plastic sheets and spray away. I find that spraying color and primer is easier. Sure, more steps but you can work with the color coat until it's right and then spray clear. If you take your time, prep really well, sand out the imperfections you can get a decent paint job.

Yes, it took some planning...leaves, bugs, etc. But lacquer dries so fast you have to use good lacquer thinner to retard the drying process.

You would be surprised how many fenders, doors, quarter panels, etc. were painted outdoors using lacquer at body shops years ago.

Anyway, I thought you guys might get a kick out of these photos.

BTW, after my wife totaled the '82 240D, the insurance adjuster was really impressed with the paint job and gave me some extra $ in the settlement.

a good paint job will be,unfortunately, around $5000.Because of that I always pay close attention to the paint when I'm buying. One of the reasons that I bought my current SLK was the immaculate paint. The other reason was a transferable warranty(and the previous owner was fastidious on maintenance).

If you have a marginal interior(seats, carpet, console, etc)that is not nearly as expensive to make new again.Plus, you can with a little effort,do a lot of the interior work yourself.

Translated, don't sweat the interior but make sure the engine, drive train and paint are as good as you can get.
