I have a 2006, 56 plate, CLK 280 elegance which has a reoccurring engine management light. Having read some of the posts on here I believe my M272 engine falls in to the balance shaft issue as car was registered in Sept 2006.

I have had this car looked at by couple of MBZ dealers and Specialists who don't seem to know what the issue is without wanting to take the whole engine out and take a look.

The car runs perfectly, ticks over, never stalls and goes like stink so that possibly rules out it being the balance shaft and maybe points towards the Camshaft Sensors or Solenoids possibly..?

Need your help here guys as i'm trying to work out if I should ditch the car or keep it as it's a relatively cheap fix??

For sure this is the balance shaft problem. But you can drive it until it drops and it could run on for another 100k, you may get a shaky engine at idle speed.

Those are not balance shaft failure symptoms - they are symptoms of failing cam sensor magnets. Balance shaft failure is P0016/P0017. While your car being a MY2006 is almost certainly in the affected range, it may never have balance shaft trouble. Cam magnets are a simple (DIY even) repair and the parts can be had for US$100.

Yep, you need four of those magnets.

FYI, DTC's that indicate bad cam magnets are:

0059 Continuous camshaft adjustment ( RIGHT ): Incorrect position of the exhaust camshaft (P0014)

0060 Continuous camshaft adjustment ( RIGHT ): Incorrect position of the exhaust camshaft (P0015)

0063 Continuous camshaft adjustment ( LEFT ): Incorrect position of the exhaust camshaft (P0024)

0064 Continuous camshaft adjustment ( LEFT ): Incorrect position of the exhaust camshaft (P0025)

0271 Continuous camshaft adjustment ( RIGHT ): Incorrect position of the intake camshaft (P0011)

0272 Continuous camshaft adjustment ( RIGHT ): Incorrect position of the intake camshaft (P0012)

0275 Continuous camshaft adjustment ( LEFT ): Incorrect position of the intake camshaft (P0021)

0276 Continuous camshaft adjustment ( LEFT ): Incorrect position of the intake camshaft (P0022)

Ok.. I swapped out the intake and exhaust camshaft magnets on bank 1, codes went with it, so assumed magnets were faulty, ordered two and replaced two in question. light came on but not for the previous ones but a new P0128?

can you help here with where this coolant thermostat is and a part number for ordering a new one.. if it's an easy DIY job then how do I go about it/ Thanks again for everyones help..

Whether it is 'easy' or not depends on your skills...Here is the WIS procedure for the task. You will note that for this engine (but not others) you will have to remove the poly-V belt, which is not easy for a beginner. Regarding the thermostat part number, like many things it depends on your engine number. My best guess is this one.

Coolant Thermostat. A 272 200 0415. from engine no 300586634, 02/03/2005. You also need the gasket & O ring.

Really? That's about the easiest thing to do! I can do it with no tools, just using my hands to pull against the tensioner. Maybe the only difficult thing is remember how to route it when you replace it, but that's what they make camera phones for, right?

Yes, you are right. But I still believe removing the serpentine belt is the easiest part of replacing the thermostat. I know the proper procedure is to use a wrench to move the tensioner, but if you just pull up on the top of the belt, you'll see the tensioner flex and you'll be able to slip the belt off of the water pump (it's the pulley with no grooves).

Hi,
I know it's been a while when you posted this msg, but I am wondering, how do you know which is the right magnet to replace. There are four of them, two on each side.
My check error is 0272 - P0012, which one of the right two magnets this could be. Upper or lower one?

Thank you in advence
