I realize now that despite being a diesel my beloved 300CD was not exactly the most fuel efficient of luxury cars. My S550 actually gets 23.5 mpg mixed and upwards of 27.5 on the freeway (65-70 mph). I guess much of this has to do with its 7 speed v. the CD's 4 speed, and its more advanced fuel injection and engine management system, resulting in 382 hp / 391 lbs ft torque as well.

My dad's S320CDI gets up and beyond 45Mpg. At freeway (65-70 mph). ;)

Very true. I would love to see how the GLK220 CDI does when and if it ever arrives in the U.S.

Wow, that mileage is much better than I would expect out of the s-classe.

Impressive really.

The S550 turn at around 1800-2000 rpms on the highway at around 65-70 mph.

BTW, not only does the S550 best my old 300CD it matches my MINI Cooper S (w/a 6-speed tiptronic automatic) in fuel economy. I am only getting 22-24mph on the Cooper with combined city and highway driving.
