Please allow me to take a moment to be a proud father.
My daughter Susan, who serves aboard the USS Benfold, (DDG65) emailed me this afternoon to let me know she passed her board and is now
EM3(S/W) Goshorn. (Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist)
Susan has been in the Navy since January 2010 and this is her first deployment. She was top grad in her A- school and made E4 after only being in a year and two weeks. She told me recently that she will probably make E5 by the end of the year.
USS Benfold has been at sea for about 6 weeks of an 8 months deployment and is on the way to the Middle East.

Best of luck to her! Sometimes getting all the requirements met on a single cruise can be tough.

Hip Hip Hooray!

Here's to smooth sailing on her deployment.
Thanks. Her ship had to leave Bali early and instead of going to Malaysia they are headed straight for Bahrain. Must be going to check on Iran.

Thanks. Her ship went into dry dock right when she got to it so she has been anxious to get to sea.

Reminds me of the guy who joined the Navy to see the world and spent his entire career in a submarine!

Congrats, Dan. You and your family deserve to be proud.

Smooth sailing and getting home safely is the Nobmob wish for your daughter.

Even tho she's Navy (I'M retired Army). I thank her for her service. The caliber of youngsters joining the military now is incredible. It's very hard to get in now.

I know you're as proud as I was my 2 of my sons when they joined over 30 years ago, albeit the Air Force. They learned a sellable skill and have profited from it.

Well done!!!

A brief sidelight - that in turn reminds me of the Airman who signed up to be a "fire control specialist" and found himself a B-52 tail gunner instead of a fireman.

Back to the point, now. :)

Just a quick update. The Vice Chief of Naval Operations flew out to visit the USS Benfold today while she is operating in the Gulf. While there, Susan and a couple of her shipmates, were presented with their ESWS awards. Not too bad getting pinned by the second highest ranking person in the whole US Navy. Susan was also give a coin by the VCNO, but I am not sure what the coin represents. Maybe some former sailors here can let us know.
Also, I found out yesterday that she passed a qualification and has become certified as an Engine Room Operator. She is now in charge of one of the main engine rooms. Amazing to me for a kid that just turned 21 a week and a half ago.
