I just bought a 2004 SL55 AMG 4 weeks ago. I have a question about the shift mode where you hold the gear shift lever all the way to the left and it should choose the proper gear for maximum acceleration. I tried this a few times but I think I'm not getting it right. Most times it revs so much I think its going to hit the rev limiter so I shift it up my self. One time I did it stopped at a light and the gear indicator went to 1 and shifted briskly up to 4. How does yours actually work?

I had no idea what you were talking about so I took a look in the manual. Page 138 of the manual "Shiting into optimal gear range" should work as you describe.

Interesting I've never heard of this before.

Have you tried holding the shifter to the left in 1st gear after you take off? Maybe it can only be activated once the car has begun moving?

Wish I could help hopefully someone will chime in with more info?

I have a 2007 SL550. When I move the gearshift to the left at a stop it shifts into first. When I boot it off the line it revs to 6500 and shifts to 2nd., it then revs to 6500 again and shifts to 3rd, etc. Way cool, sort of like have an automatic standard...
