I own a 1979 300sd Avocado green (light green non metallic) paint in excellent condition, with light parchment interior. There is not a single tear or crease in any of the seats or headliner. The bad is: Needs AC compressor, has a crack in the vinyl dash. The ACC servo functions perfectly and the AC worked properly until the compressor failed. This car has 167K original miles on it and has spent its entire life in the garage. I am a euro mechanic and I purchased this car from one of my customers whom purchased this car brand new in 1979. My dad wants to give me his 1998 bmw 740iL which is in very good condition as well... But the condition is I have to get rid of a car to gain the BMW. I commute with the 300sd everyday, has been a very reliable car and well maintained. So my question is... will this car ever be worth something? If I sell this car will I regret selling it... as in not being able to find an equivalently clean one with low miles in the future, or as long as I have the coin the cars will always be available? Its a tough decision for me to make because my first car was a 116 300sd (not as clean as this one obviously) but I know the newer BMW is a more convenient car. Any comments and opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!:confused:

Where do you live? Yes, the BMW will be a fancier car. But, you will pay more for fuel. The 300SD will probably never be worth more than $4000. (IMHO). It would have to be in fine shape, at that. Just my thoughts. Hope it helps.

Agree with rabbit188, your fuel bills would definitely increase exponentially with the bmw. I would prefer an older diesel versus a newer gasoline fed car. In 10 years time, your 300sd would likely be still chugging along. I'm not sure about the bmw though.

Thank you all for your posts and opinions. I drove the BMW consistently for a while and it was very fast and comfortable, but very thirst. I decided to keep the 300sd and get rid of the BMW. I just replaced all 4 shocks with original bilstein units and I'm loving life. I don't know why this car puts a smile on my face :) And it's rust free. Always been garaged. If I ever decide to sell it, I'm sure someone from this forum will give it a good home.:surrender:

I know...old thread. I have to say though, that one of the most expensive cars I have ever owned was a 7 series BMW. Nothing on that car was inexpensive to replace or repair, and I replaced and repaired a lot. Thirsty, non-sporty (even with the Sport setting), and "blah" styling.
Even with '70s technology, the 116 is a better all-around car.
