Wagons command high prices.

Good mileage, if true. The pics seem to back this up.

What does "fully restored" mean, precisely?

It's a 3 liter, not a 2.5 five cylinder engine, hence the 300 designation.

It is NOT front wheel drive.

Hopefully everything works as designed, should, seeing as how it's been "fully restored", but find out for sure.

Looks pretty good, potential dent in left rear fender.

Wood trim missing from the HVAC unit.

What is the definition of fully restored?

If anyone is interested in the seller's definition (ie, description of repairs) it is pasted below and found at the following URL with photos...

http://classiccars.com/listing/337783.html?utm_source=send_to_friend&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=referred_vehicle

It's an interesting read to say the least:

"Silver color exterior with zero rust and Classic blue ,highly durable Tex Mex
interior! This low mileage[133,000 original miles],completely restored 1984 TD
300 wagon has absolutely no mechanical or exterior body issues whatsoever, other than a very minor headliner leak and a worn upper ball joint on the drivers side[a $250.00 fix]-the car can be driven as is safely in its current cond.--

I encourage all independent mechanical
inspections and car fax to support this claim!!New water pump installed in 2009. New Alternator installed in 2009.New dashboard cover installed in 2009!

4 Brand New Perrelli all season tires installed in 2010! I have well over $$13K
invested in this TD wagon, and alot of time, sweat and energy personally invested in this personal keeper.I harvested and installed many of the used parts myself to restore this wagon, having owned 11 other TD mercs yrs. 81-85. I know these cars inside and out, having been working with them
for over 6 yrs.!! this wagon cruises on the open road at well over 100 miles an hour or more easily and comfortably!! have rear seats and the headrests for rear seats too---all in great cond.

This TD300 is in overall excellent condition! it includes beautiful
mint, uncracked interior Wood vaneer around all dashboard areas!! Entire sunroof rubber seals have been recently replaced and the sunroof does not leak.!!!.The leaking headliner would be an easy and cheap fix!

The entire vehicle has been completely restored, largely by me personally!! The A/C was recharged in late 2010 and was working 2 yrs. ago, but is now not blowing cold, but is a minor fix to repair--very few old TD's have working AC's,and I wouldn't spend any time or money addressing the AC personally!!!---esp. with all 4 windows working, and the sunroof. the AC could be converted to R134 and fixed for roughly 350-500.00,but again,I wouldn't waste my $$ on the AC!!! the Heater works perfect!

Mint, original,Rare 3rd row backseat is in mint condition and has
original seat belts intact,as with any orig. 3rd row back seats!!-- Zero rust on
exterior body and the underbody is also completely rust free, even at jacking
points=a rarity!!! the front tires had new oil/dirt guards installed last year
on the wheel hubs, new clutch fan motor was installed 3 yrs. ago ,which is a
vital component located over the radiator.Radiator flushed/coolant changed and
diesel flush done in 2010.The rarely known third fuel filter, located on the fuel
tank itself, can often become clogged with old diesel sludge, was flushed in 2008
and greatly improved the power of my wagon!!!

Four Original ,rare adjustable mercedes luggage cross bars on roof rack.2 New
rear axles just installed in 2010 to replace the original axiels, which went out
one week apart!! All electrics work, including all 4
windows. Transmission shifts smoothly and has never had any problems! the valves
have been tuned up yearly and the oil ,fuel filters=3,and tranny [fluid and
filters]have been serviced religiously by me personally!

new valve cover gasket
installed in 2009!!! new under the hood black, foam heat cover, newly
installed, and new never used plug in block heater for cold winter mornings, both
installed in 2010.the block heaters come in handy in winter,in which you plug in
the car into an electric outlet at nite, which keeps the engine warm overnite, for
easy starting in the cold ,winter AM!!!

Original engine with only 133K miles, she leaks no engine or tranny oil, which is
rare for any older TD's--- new rear view mirror.the vacuum system works properly
meaning that when the ignition is turned off,the engine turns off
immediately, both the ignition and door locks operate on a vacuum system which
can often have issues with older TD's,this car does not have any vacuum
issues!!the door locks do not work anymore in conjuction with the vaccum
system, but this is typical of older TD's!

I have reciepts for everything done to
this vehicle for the last 6 yrs. by me and the former owner, including ALL
reciepts for every repair and every new part mentioned in this listing!!! If
you're seeking a mint TD wagon,I don't believe you will find one better
maintained or TLC'd as much as this one!!!--1984 and 1985 were the best yrs. for these TD's,with '85 being the final
year of production!!

heres is an additional ,complete list of everything I've done to this excellent cond. 1984 TD
wagon:

1.mint uncracked tail lights and headlight housings in both front and rear=rare!

2.battery is roughly 2 yrs. old with lots of life left in it----starts even in
bitter cold without block heater plugged in except in sub zero temps, which is
why I installed the block heater!!!

3.all filters+fluids[oil, tranny, fuel]personally serviced by me for the last 4
yrs.

4.four new pirelli tires with a lifetime warranty from any Discount Tires
location, alligned and balanced independently in both 2009 and 2010

5.rear hatch springs are strong and support the hatch in the open position[have
a new set of springs to offer for the future,if the current ones ever weaken]

6.all seats in excellent condition and replaced with better quality ones by me

7.new rear light assembly installed in 2010--left side,by me,as the connectors
were not making contact for left turn signal, now works properly!!

8.passed inspection yearly

9.all new rubber doughnuts supporting the exhaust system, with new extra backup
doughnuts

10.brand new lenses installed on the back up lights on rear end, which are
cracked easily if hydraulic system doesn't work with heavy loads!

11.brand new fuel return lines on the injectors

12.mint cond. head rests for the back seats--a rarity that they even exist on
most all wagons!

13.rear end suspension work done in 2010 to address worn out bearings on left
side

14.newly replaced and bead blasted hub caps installed by me which highlight the
new pirelli tires---see my photos for the quality of my hubs!!!

15.all belts and hoses replaced in 2010,due to normal wear--reciepts provided

16.new timing chain part provided--new in box[good idea to replace the timing
chain at 200-250K miles

17.hydraulic system filter and fluid serviced in 2009 when hydraulic system was working,
updated and repaired, but has since stopped working again--probably needs a new accumalator!!
[a new in box extra hydraulic filter supplied for next service

change]-the reason most hydraulic systems don't work on these old TD's is that
most owners aren't even aware that a changeable filter and fluid even exist, and
therefore never service them! new/used accumalators are not expensive to purchase or install.

18.new diesel primer pump installed in 2010

19.have the vaneer climate control cover ,which is in mint cond.,and simply needs to be glued back on!

This car is a bargin for the asking price, as everything has already been
personally addressed/repaired/restored that needed fixing ,which involved a huge
expense in time/money /energy for the seller!!!"

Thank you Rmac58. Deciphering these descriptions is akin to a crime scene investigator. The "completely restored" raised an eye for me as well.

WARNING!

I had dealings with this same guy (and same car) when it was on ebay. It even went far enough that I paid to have it towed to a local Benz specialist and have it inspected.

According to the report I got from them, it would need at least $4000 in various repairs, the engine has a noticeable knock, there's a rust spot forming from improper drainage, and the guy selling it is firm on asking way more than it's worth, given what it needs.

It'd be a bum deal at $5k, let alone the almost ten he's firm on. There's a reason he's been trying to sell it for so long.

I may even still have the email I got from the mechanic detailing what it needs and the cost estimate, if you're interested. It won't help you much though, the seller won't budge on his price.

Several things are very wrong with that car. I'm glad I could save you the time and headaches I went through to find out for myself.

He'll never sell it unless his asking price drops to less than $5k. Fully restored, FEH!

Thank you for looking over Stevo! Is your 5-speed TD zippy? As much as a turbo? Unfortunately I bet the Euros are hard to find.

BS1kes, I suggest you check out ebay. A exquisite rust-free example just sold there recently for less than $6k, and there are several others worth a look at.

Also, I know it's unsolicited, but I would suggest staying away from the Euro gray market imports (I have one). A surprising and annoying number of things tend to be different, especially in the wagons.

Your advice is well-taken. We toasted monsieur longbottle over single malts after dinner tonight. My wife thanks you as well for helping us stay clear of the "fully restored" Titanic ;)

Again, glad I could help.

You might find this one worth taking a look at: Mercedes /Gold 1984 300TD Turbo Diesal Wagon

You could take the same route I ended up taking, and buying one cheap to put money into fixing it. If it's low rust and the engine is properly maintained, everything else can be restored in time. It is a Euro, but the price is very modest.

I wonder what the deal is with the breather hose, that is not an 1984 set up.

The price reflects the work necessary to bring up to snuff.

Rear door doesn't stay up and the mold?

An '84 had the light alloy rims.

Hmmmm, maybe not a 1984 after all.

The non turbo TD is no race car but it does fine for my needs. I would call it fairly zippy. Its a lot less complicated to work on, fun to drive and the MPG is good but I wouldn't win a race against a turbo car.
