Hello everyone.......

I am going to do a few repairs to my 84 280sl.....

1) New soft top / I want the original brown color / I found some tops for around $300 or so at.....AutoBerry.com......would anyone recommend these tops?

2) Trunk 280sl badge / Where can I get one?

3) Replacing the carpet / I have the original carpet....its old but looks ok...would you replace or leave the original.

4) NO a/c in this car....it gets hot in Florida....is there after market a/c systems? Do I search for a used one? Do I not mess w/ it at all?

5) Paint job......it is not the original color.....the original color is a green....who do I trust to do a good original color paint job?

6) Rims....not in bad shape....should I just have them repainted the original color?

7) Seat covers....are there any good ones that someone could recommend

1) world upholstery and Gahh are popular I think

2) if you have a pc, java 6, and a credit card, download the EPC from starttec (or something like that). Just google "Mercedes EPC" and you will find it. It is the electronic parts catalog. I know I have seen all badges in there. You can get the part number for that part (or any part) and then go to one of the online dealers to get a price. Mercedespartscenter.com lists even parts that are no longer available, but I remember the website name and it is a quick price check for me. Of course you can call your local dealer and just asked them to get you a price, and they should also tell you if the part is available, at least during the hours it they are open.

If you are looking for a used one, it seems that 280sl automatics are often parted out, even when in running condition, which is a shame since that 2.8 is such a great motor. A guy in Sacramento California recently parted one out, and I believe the Benzworld user "proctologist" took home the trunk lid. He might have the badge and no use for it. Send him a pm asking. If he doesn't have it, he could probably put you in contact with the seller (who's name I forget even though I bought the euro headlights from that car just a few months ago).

3) is it all the carpet, or just the floormats? Both are available, very nice Mercedes floormats for $80 or full carpet sets on ebay and world upholstery for about $400.

4) I would send the car to canada and buy a new one if you want ac. The retrofit is too big of a project in my opinion, and you'd be on your way to the price of a new 107 with ac.

5) paint is expensive, $3000 many say. If the car was a stick shift I would do it, but as I say, folks part running 280sl cars even though I think they are near the top of the desirability range for a driver car due to the better fuel economy. If you paint the car, the cheapest way to do it is to do all the prep (removing and installing all trim yourself).

6) get silver wheel paint at your local parts store lowes or Home Depot. It is a little shinier than original, but only $6. And if all four wheels match, then you are good. Parts stores also usually have clear coat for wheels. That helps the look. Eastwood's silver wheel paint is probably a little better match having less metallic fleck, but it will run you about $20 per can.

7) world upholstery

I recently had my 560sl seat covers replaced, used Autoberry but cannot recommend them. Installer said they were 1" too small and well cords are off and thread showing in many places. When I contacted Autoberry they place all defects on the installer.
Always good to hear from someone that has used a vendor. The good, bad and Ugly.
The report is appreciated.
