FSM says remove the oil filter tower to remove the injection pump.

Some here have said it is not necessary.

Inspection reveals the governor bolt will prevent enough rear ward mobility of the ip to allow disengagement from its mounting studs, as would the plastic vacuum actuator immediately behind the AlDA anerod unit. Both are too close to the filter tower.

Seems possible removing the governor adjust bolt and the vacuum acutator would allow enough mobility. That filter tower would be messy to remove with the engine in the car.

Thanks in advance.

Want to be helpful? Detail how you get it done without. NOt the obvious things, the apparent conflicts in rearward mobility.

Since I never have I guess I can't be much help to you.

I can however point out several good reasons TO remove the oil filter housing.

1. Access
2. Replace the housing gasket which tends to get leaky
3. Find out what condition your oil cooler hoses really are in.

1. Access
Access is often tight on MB, if this can be done without, its far better.

2. Replace the housing gasket which tends to get leaky
ONce the ip is out, of course, the gasket is not problem.

3. Find out what condition your oil cooler hoses really are in.
Those are removable without removing the filter tower. It is a bit of a puzzle though.

You can remove the bolt you refer to and the plastic VCV, you may want to try that and see if it gives you enough room.

I pulled one from a junkyard car a year or so ago without removing the oil tower. It was not very difficult at all. I think i removed the rack dampener tho. I also installed one but the engine was out of the car.
