Posted this in the W210 section, who advised me to ask you folks instead.

I've got an OM606 strapped to a pallet, attempting to get it running with a stock OM603 pump before concluding it's good enough to install. The turbo oil supply is open, as is the plug on the port side of the filter housing. Despite cranking for 5-10 seconds several times, there's nothing more than a residual trickle of oil from both holes. The engine is level and the dipstick shows oil above the minimum mark. Furthermore, I can verify the oil level at just below the block/oilpan seam on starboard; the lower pan section has a hole and leaks profusely, so I have that section sitting in a plastic tub, whose level has equalized with the level inside the pan. The level switch is above the level of the oil, and is closed, which I assume means either the level is still too low or the sensor is defective.

I don't know cranking speed, but it sounds reasonable and healthy now that I replaced the jumpercables with actual power cables and ground straps securely bolted to the battery, starter, and engineblock.

0. First and foremost - does anyone have a link to a service/repair manual that covers this engine? I'm specifically looking for a diagram of the lubrication system, as it would answer the next three questions:

1. I read suggestions to priming the oilpump by pouring oil into the housing. Should it go into the outer or inner chamber?

2. What is the spring-loaded valve-looking thing inside the filter housing, at about 11 o'clock?

3. At what point does the turbo supply gallery diverge from the others? Is it better to point the supply pipe into the pan and let it gush (once it builds pressure, that is), or to block it off? The turbo is missing.

4. How long do these normally take to build pressure?

The W124 was never supplied with the turbo variant of the OM606. You're going to be better off getting those answers from the W210 or the W140 forum. Be aware that this is a US based forum, and the US spec W140 never came with the turbo OM606.

This is the best we've got. See link, but again this is the NA version.

In regards to oil pressures in general, with the engine running at full temp you'll want to see a oil pressure of at least 1 bar at idle preferably more. More importantly, the pump must build up full pressure to full 3+bar before the engine reaches 1500rpm.

You'd be well served by getting the factory OM605/606 engine manual (see link below).

You could measure the resistance at the oil pressure switch during cranking, should go from closed contact to open contact.
If you take out your glow plugs or injectors you will have more cranking speed.
