Buying a 406 with almost 6K hours. What expense can I expect to run into overhauling it? Can I expect to see a little more use out of it as is?

I realize there are sooooo many variables, but a ballpark figure would help. Can these be sleeved?

Thanks,
Dave

Dave,
Three words come to mind, Condition, Condition, Condition!! With used Unimogs it is sometime a case of you get what you pay for.
If it has been abused, put away wet, and never maintained. You could put two times what you paid for it, just in parts! If its in great shape, it might just need a fluid change and its ready to go afor another 6k hours! These motors are rated to 12500 hours before major rebuilds are necessary. As for having sleeves, it depends on what year mog you have. The later blocks are sleeved, while the early ones are not.
You will find all that it needs as soon as you start running it, as most problems show up very quickly! Good luck with it, and have fun. They are great trucks, even if they need alittle TLC!

I'd run a compression test (or have someone else do it) on the engine after you run it a little bit. This will give you a good idea of where you are at on engine condition. I've had a couple of these trucks with 7K + hours on them (well maintained, daily use trucks from Germany) that the compression test revealed that there was very little wear, and that the engine was good to go for another 5K hrs. BUT as Von said, if it was run hard and put up wet it could need an overhaul, and it is hard to tell how much it needs until it is torn down.

Cheers,
Ben

Good to know the 12500 hrs. Its a '79, and many things have been replaced or worked over, like the trans, starter, new tires etc. Maybe he was saving the engine for last??...or didn't think it needed it. "it runs real good no knocks and is smooth"
I've checked out your work Von (perfectionist) and value your input. Thanks!

Ben, I feel like I've been welcomed by the "Pro's" as I respect your input as well. Yup, been lurking...
I'll put you advice to work and ask for a compression test, what numbers should I be looking for as acceptable for this year?

Thanks,
Dave

Hey guys, sorry for the dorky question but... could somebody fill me in on just what you mean by the expression ( Put away wet)
Not such a "dorky" question. My read on Von's expression is one that's often refered to horses. Riding horses hard works up a sweat and lather, then putting them in the stall/barn with feed and water will cause them to colic, hence a sick horse. In other words walk them, cool'em down and treat them good before putting them away....take care of them.

Thanks Auminer for that info. It seems I have heard that before, (letting things cool before shuting down). I'm always lookin for the best ways to care for and feed a mog... you know what they say about prevention!
The Slothmog and I thank you.

Auminer,

I believe that the lowest number that most of the later om352's were supposed to have for compression at starting speed was 20bar and that good was from 22 to 24 bar, but that is from memory, so someone correct me if I'm wrong. You have to pull the valve cover and injectors to do the compression test, it is pretty involved, but will reveal what condition the engine you have is in.

Von,

I understood what you were saying, and I definately fall into the "young wippersnapper" category, but I did grow up in farm country :).

Cheers,
Ben

The spec is 20 bar minimum at starting speed (180-200 RPM) with no more then 4 bar difference between any two cylinders.
