Ok, so I bought a hood ornament from Ebay for my car...

Mine arrived in 3-pieces? I didn't expect that, and yet I am trying to figure out how am I supposed to put this in my car. It came with a small black metal kind of u-shaped piece. The hood ornament and base, and a funky black thing. I am pretty sure that helps lock under the hood.

I am terrible at explaining, so I included a couple pictures. All I know it's off a 1985 300E. I hope it's the right one I needed.

Can anybody tell me this looks like the proper hood ornament for a 1989 300E, and how to attach it properly?

It is the right one, But it will be terrible to attach the 3 pieces together first, Ask me how i know.

Anyway, I am worst than you in explaining, so I hope someone else here would tell you how to do it.
Whew, that's good to know! The only thing I did know is the 300E didn't change TOO much from the mid-80's-early-90's. I was hoping this ornament was the right one. I thought when I first got it that it was broken.
First year for the 124 chassis in the US was 1986. It was available in Europe a year earlier.
As others have said, yes, you go the right ornament. And they're also correct that it will be an awful job to get it in installable condition. The whole mess is spring-loaded to grab the grill shell and once taken apart, well, yuck. BTDT, had the sore fingers to prove it. Wear eye protection.
I'll post a pic of what a brand new hood ornament looks like so you have an idea of where you're headed.
Do they usually come in one piece when bought, or did he take it apart for no real reason? In the picture it came as one piece, should I ask him why the heck he took it apart?
They come from MB in one piece, and the install takes about one minute. Simple. If I had what you bought in front of me, I'd toss it in the trash, go to MB, and buy one for the $20 and call it a lesson learned.
No, I am going to send it back to the seller for a refund. What a freaking jerk because it was sold as one-piece. I am not going to throw it out because the seller jacked it up. I am SO mad.

That was really helpful, thank you. I am going to send it back to the seller, and I am going to get a new one. My guy worked for hours on it, and it was put together right, but the spring didn't work effectively.
He can't put it back together correctly ALONE, He will need help from someone else to slide the small pin in place when the first man pulls the spring through the U-shaped metal.
Oh, we figured that much out, trust me. ;D

The spring wasn't working right though.
Smart move going with new parts. one of the great things about older Mercedes Benz is the wide availability of parts makes them very repairable. and in many cases the parts are not very expensive. Sure there are times when buying used parts is going to make a lot more sense, I always check the new part price before buying any used part, and more often than not, the small difference in price makes the new part a better safer buy.
I'm sure that every member of this site has their own favorite supplier. One I would recomend is Adsitco, definately not the lowest prices, but everything I have bought from them has been new, genuine Mercedes Benz and the service has been great. Plus their catalog provides a quick price reference.
By the way, I really like the color of your car, It's the only one I've ever seen. Good luck with getting it back in top shape. Some of the guys are giving you a hard time about the bra and fender trim. They may not be my taste, but it's not my car!!. We all want our cars to make our own personal statement, go with what YOU like and you won't go wrong. Welcome to Mercedes Benz ownership
I will check into that, thank you! The color is 261 [willow green], it is a semi-restore project. There was a car accident, and the guy spray painted the hood in various areas, which makes it look terrible. When I get the funds, the hood absolutely needs to be redone. The mileage is so low, it will be worth fixing up. ;D
