Hello all,
this is a nice place to find information. I've been lurking for about
3 weeks.

I got the parts I orderd to replace the oil level sensor and oil pressure
sender yesterday. Today when i pulled the oil pan, I found part of
the oil pickup screen in the bottom of the pan.

My question is, do you think I will be ok leaving this alone as the screen part
is still on the pump and only the bottom part wich is plastic broke off.

thanks for any input.

That's strange. How would such a thing break off? I would certainly replace it, not that expensive and a very critical part of the engine, and you're already there.

Replace the oil pick up screen. You'll save yourself the trouble down the road by doing so. The pick up screen should not be plastic in the first place, it's more of a metal mesh.

I looked online for a replacement but only could find complete oil pumps
for $355.00. I put it back together as is but did not put any sealer on the
new gasket so I can chang if I find one.

Oh, It was broken at the narrow part of the plastic piece and it looks
like a upsidedown crown. the screen and plastic surrounding the pickup
are intact util just below the screen where it broke. I noticed some small
dents in the pan, but they were a maximum of about 1/2" deep. I don't
know how close the clearence there is between the two pieces.

So if any one knows of a place that sells the screens please let me know.
thanks!

The screen part is metal but it is in a black tube like that goes arround
the OD of the pickup and after the sceeen there is a piece thet goes
down about 2" into the oil. Thats the broken piece.

I can't speak for Benz engineering because I haven't had to drop the oil pan on any of my cars. But in the case of most, if not all, of the domestic brand cars I've worked on the oil pickup is *in contact* with the oil pan bottom. This is to ensure that the pump is getting a stream of airless oil during the most extreme operating conditions.

IMO you definitely want to replace the broken part to avoid potential oil starvation.

I guess that the small dents are the cause of it breaking. I didn't make it to
the dealer today but I will try again tomarrow. I'm not driving the car, but I want
it fixed any ways. thank you for your input
