For the past 5-6 months I have been selling the 1984 500 SEL to my ex-employee "Larry Mondello". Mondello cruises by on Friday and sez that the oil pressure gauge isn't moving off zero and the engine is knocking a bit. Through discussion, we determine that the oil hasn't been changed in about a year and it's a quart low. I put a quart of transmission fluid in it and have him come back Saturday to change the oil and filter, which I buy (10-30 hi mileage oil and a Mann filter). Upon his arrival on Saturday he states that the gauge started moving and the knock went away. We change the oil and filter and an hour later the needle doesn't move and the noise is back.

My guess is that the screen on the oil pump is covered in sludge and we need to pull the lower pan tomorrow and, hopefully, clean the sludge enough that the engine might live. :surrender:

Anyone have any other helpful suggestions?

I am really bugged that one of the 126's is suffering from this, but I thought a grown man would change his oil responsibility. Maybe it's because we're putty people and not mechanics?

^^^^ A couple reasons.
1 Oil light in dash did not come on
2 He called me after he had left my shop
3 Knock is upper end type "tick", not a bottomed type "hammer".
4 He still saw oil splashing in the valve train after he took out the oil fill cap
5 I'm not his mommy. As much as he would like to think so.
