All wrong !!!! The problem is the oil cooler gasket. Does it can you to believe?
Hi Matraga, confirmed NOT from the oil cooler gasket, I took out the oil filter insert, change the o-rings and filter (although only 700mile), reinstalled, no more leak, thank God. Besides, the origin of the leak can be seen from my and my friends' naked eyes.

^^^ Sorry, H, I see that in your post you changed the filter and orings and that took care of it, trying to read too fast ... as usual.

Have a good night, my friend.

Sorry. Yes, I work for my government before. My previous posts may not be very clear. Filter changed in Feb, then oil leak discovered in Apr, changed filter and rings again, till now still ok. Leak was not from the oil pressure port as I also suspected it before and I read that thread also.

PLACEMENT OF LARGE O-RING

TO THE MB BRAINTRUST:

I too am experiencing oil leaking from the filter cap on my '98 E320 wagon. I isolated the leak to the filter housing and replaced filter & O-rings, re-tightend to 25 Nm with torque wrench. STILL SEAPING !!!$#&%!!!!

Here are my questions:

1) I installed a Purolator filter (made in China) from Advance. Could its cheaper quality/tolerances be related to the leaking/seepage issue? I think not, but I look forward to confirmation or convincing otherwise.

2) I have been placing the large O-ring in the groove at the ends of the threads, NOT flush with the top rim of the filter cap. That is, when I tighten down the cap, I cannot see it. Put another way, the cap is NOT squeezing the o-ring between the uper rim of the housing such that the O-ring is visible after tightening. I believe I am following rec. proceedure on placing the largest O-ring, but seek confirmation.

3) Finally, if I am placing thelarge O-ring correctly, and the cheap-o filter is not the culprit, what could it be???

Thanks for any and all insight.

It sounds like you are installing the filter and O-ring correctly so I would suspect the filter itself. For awhile AutoZone or Advanced Auto was selling a genuine German filter in a Purolator box for a good price.

Orings work without squeezing and the recommended torque is for holding the cap from coming loose, while the pressure is never applied to oring.
Just as a sample the 3000 psi scuba regulators are "finger tight up" only and it is the air pressure that seats the oring sealed.
The only explanation for new oring leak is some mechanical damage to the groove, or oring.

I may be jumping in here a little late and have not read all of the threads but I notice that the engine had a oil cooler attached to the side of the oil filter housing. There are two o-rings between the filter housing and the oil cooler that may be where the leak is occurring. I repaired a leak on a friend of mines engine. The o-rings are parts #17 & #23. As i recall you do not have to remove the oil filter housing or timing cover. Remove the smog air pump to access the bolts attaching the oil cooler to the filter housing.
Hope this helps.

 Cars are expensive in Brazil? That's interesting... I thought Mercedes-Benz is everywhere in Brazil... probably only for Actros..

Well, in my place, the whole country only has less than 10 W210 on sale online, they are all post-face-lift version, E200K and E240, prices are around 30K$, but your 1998 E320 is 30,000... incredible...

Hey tell me more, does Brazilian government calculating tax according to it's original price or cylinder volume?:D

Karl, how are you? where are you?
Hey IV... I'm better than one month ago, I'll move to waterloo, ontario on January.;). I'm now in a huge city which has 30 million citizens but there are only two W210s running on the road:D

Nice to hear your car doesn't leaking from the bottom, it's leaking from the top. Did you do a lot of high-rev on winding roads in the New Territories..

You own one of the 2? Glad to hear from you again.

Yes, I did lots of high rev in NT, hence the leak, and I tested it, if I don't high rev all the time, no leak from the breather cover. Also the leak around the oil filter was due to my curiosity, I tried to open to the oil filter insert with my hand, and unsuccessful, but it did moved a bit, I was unsure if I did torqued it back properly, obviously not, so the leak :D:D

PROBLEM SOLVED!!

THANKS TO ALL WHO REPLIED. I REINSTALLED NEW OE FILTER AND OE o-rings and , VIOLA. No more leaks. Also, I inspected the inside of the filter housing at the top of the threads and noticed a very small burr (like a small piece of the threading broke off) which may be damaging the o-ring when tightening down. I will inspect the present o-ring for damage consistent with such a burr during next oil change or (do I dare say it!) if the oil leak starts anew.

Thanks again to all.

one more thing:

i have bmw 540i
and had the same oil leak

i went to forums and found that aftermarket o-rings are actually a little thiner, which couses oil to leak from the filter cap

When i bought the filter and o-ring from the dealer problem was fixed.

i also have 2000 e320 4matic and it has the same problem, will change the o-ring , pretty sure this will take care of the problem

Please help identify mystery seal !

Have a 99 E320 and have a steady oil leak coming from the bottom of my filter housing. Based on what I have read assumed it was the oil test port gasket, so got new one and began the change process. When I took the existing one out is was not "hard" or otherwise compromised, in fact looked as good as the replacement. Then I found the pictured seal/gasket laying on the ground under the car. Can anyone help me identify it..and what else could be causing the leak from my filter housing? Thanks in advance for the help.

Just to close this loop, the Purolator standard oil filter for our engines does include an undersized o-ring that will leak. Plus, the filter flops around. They have a fleece version listed for the M272 that is the correct Behr size for ours and works fine. Stick with Behr, Bosch or Hengst.
