Is anyone having their oil and filter changed at the intial welcome visit? I have read various posts as to the pros and cons but no one has actually said they have had it done.

It seems logical to me to get rid of the contaminants (someone said metal flakes?) from the initial break-in period but will I really be wasting my money?

I just went in for my initial visit yestereday at 3300 miles. I asked if I get a free oil change with the checkup and they said no. I'm thinking of just doing it at some other place at ~4000 miles and buying the Mobil 1 separately because they charge ~$110 for the oil change at the dealer. I don't understand why it's ever a bad thing to get your oil changed as the guy conveyed to me. Since I drag launched my car from every freeway entrance since 1000 miles and raced on the 110 a couple times going 120-140, I'm pretty sure the oil is dirty. I think it just depends how hard you drive your car. Good range is 3500-6000 for our synthetic (3500 for really hard drivers like me, 6000 for those who baby their SLK and don't go above 5000rpm).

I have not (>11K now). I have followed the manufacturers recommended intervals and in the past have gotten good results and lots of miles with fairly aggressive driving...[:D]

Wow 10-12k? I guess I don't have to change the oil for a while either. How do you know when you have to change? Look at the color of the oil with the dipstick? I'm just scared I'll hurt the engine with bad oil when I track it.
