Although most here will say it's a DIY job, I always let my dealer do it. They always use the correct oil (Mobile 1) and filter(fleece), they have the best extractors, and they do a 27 point check of my car--all for only $59.95!

Your car is on the FSS (Flexible Service System) and requires A & B services every 10k miles. Have you had either of them done yet? An oil change is part of those services.

But if you must, here is what MB recommends: Mercedes-Benz Engine Oil Recommendations

Amazing, the retail cost of the oil is nearly $55, of course their cost is less. I DIY since the dealer is 30 miles away and they want $100+ for the job. I got some Havoline 100% synthetic that meets the specific MB spec for $3.00/qt on sale at Big Lots.

Dangerous... But be sure to use the fleece filter!

In Mobil 1 we trust

Some dealerships like Jayhawk's give this excellent oil change deal, and their business case must be based on the "free:p inspection" finding things that they recommend to be fixed at the same time, and that gives them a profit making opportunity.

Be really sure that the oil is approved for YOUR vehicle, not many Havoline oils are appoved for newer MB's in that approved oil list:read: .

Most people use Mobil 1 0W40. Fleece filter is better than paper filter for extended oil change intervals:thumbsup: , but it is not mandated by MB, actually it is not even available for all MB engines.

hmmm ... my manual doesn't list specific intervals, just says to do the service when the message comes up. Right now it just says "Service A in 1000 miles"; no mention of service B

After Service A usually comes Service B. I noticed you have an '03 S500. Are you still under 4 years and 50,000 miles? Check with your dealer, because you still may fit under the free service for at least one more time.

For 4 years and 50,000 miles, they used to offer free services when it was time, but they dropped that plan altogether in 2005. You have to pay for them now if it's newer than 2005.

BTW Mike, you can reset that service message by going to your on-screen menu and clicking over to the mileage screen and pressing the Up Arrow on your steering wheel. It will show the next service w/ a wrench, I believe. When you get there press the Reset button on the dash. It will reset to 10,000 and count down from there. BUT I would recommend that you have the dealer do it as part of the A or B service that you apparently need. That way your alerts won't be out of sync w/ the actual service schedule. Your dealer is supposed to reset it after every service, but they sometimes don't and you need to check.
