Hello.

Im planning to change my oil using a syphon pump.

Im I right in saying that all i do is,

1. Remove dipstick
2. Place syphon pump tube in where the dipstick would be.
3. Use syphon pump to remove oil.
4. Top up oil using about 8 litres(Im using Mobil 1 New Life 0W/40 Oil)
5. Change oil filter (Im using K&N HP-7004)
6. Have a cup of tea. :D

I seen an oil syphon for £5 and though to myself this would be much easier than jacking up car etc etc.

Cheers

I just tried that on my 2000 s430. I then pulled the drain plug and it looked like about a quart of oil came out. You may want to try that on your car to see how much dirty oil remains after you pump out through the dip stick tube.

Many people use the siphon method but keep in mind that metal shavings from your engine sink to the bottom of the oil pan and the conventional method of draining it from the bottom most likely will remove more of the bad stuff.

I have a friend who drain his oil from the drain plug and once the dripping stops, he pours in a couple of quarts of fresh oil from the top, washing or flushing more of the residue before putting the drain plug back in and completing his oil change.

Is he overly cautious? Perhaps but he keeps his cars for a long time,200K miles or so and does not want take any chances.
