Hello guys,

Thanks for you guys since you helped me many times.

My W220 S320 with 160K miles, I have always use semi-synthetic Total Quartz 7000(MB229.1 approved ) for my engine with 3k miles interval but I am thinking that wasting money so Now I am at 3k mile and I want to extend my interval with that oil when can I replace the oil?
Next oil I am thinking to use Total Quartz 9000 (MB 229.5 approved) with 10k+ mile interval. Is that ok to my engine since they told me that with high mileage enigne dont use fulk synthetic oil.
Please advise

Thanks in advance

Well, if you're changing your oil at 3K mile intervals, then you're probably just fine doing what you're doing. However, I would still use 229.5 oil. Not sure how common this is in Lebanon, but here in the States, we typically use Mobil-1 fully synthetic 0W-40 European Formula. For us, it's available at the local Walmart store (ubiquitous here) and relatively inexpensive.

Oil change intervals are almost the stuff of near-religious flame wars. :) You ask 10 people, you'll probably get at least five different answers.

For those who rely on the car's computer, that generally means about 10K miles (16K km). I do it at 5K miles with the full-syn 0W-40 'cause I'm kinda old-school. Others have sent in their oil to Blackstone Labs and have been told that their oil is fine even after 10K miles.

My next experiment will be to keep the oil for 7,500 miles and change the oil filter at half that, as some others here have suggested.

Hi,

Also depends what type of use the Car is getting, for example a daily 60 mile Commute the Oil can go longer than a single weekly 2 mile trip to the Grocery Store.

Also don't mess around with changing filters between Oil, and using cheapo's, just use an MB Filter, they are cheap enough !!

My personal recommendation 6 months / 6000 miles whichever comes first.
Cheap Insurance for your Engine.

I've come across controversies about using full synthetic engine oil on an old engine that never used it before that internal and external leaks could occur. Does this apply to this engine too or is it considered modern compared to the older ones?

The local dealer here in Saudi Arabia provides 5w40 for all MB's including that engine.

By the way, there are full synthetic MB approved 229.3's as well. Not all of them are 229.5. But this is not important in this discussion.

I've found that notion to be nonsense. If a car is leaking oil for any reason, then it needs work. I use fully synthetic oil in my '90's-era Civic. There was an oil leak; matter of fact, three of 'em. It required the following things to be fixed.

1.) Valve cover gasket didn't have Hondabond (RTV) on it at the corners, like the factory service manual says to do. Fixed now.
2.) Distributor o-ring was old. Replaced.
3.) Oil pan gasket was old. Replaced.

No more leaks. :)

And yep, the M113 engines are pretty modern. But that's got nothing to do with whether the engine will leak or not. The above applies just as much to a 1960's-era muscle car as it does to our W220's. If it leaks, something needs fixing.

Hi,

Yeah, I get what Tusabes is saying, but tbh, if it were my Car, and a Rear Main Seal had more than a single "hangy drip" every half hour, then it'd get done !!

I hate a Car that needs levels topping up more than once every couple months !!

My long gone Ford Explorer had the tiniest Windscreen Washer Bottle I've ever seen, held about 1 litre !!
Used to have to top it up about 5 times on a foul winters 650mile journey South, really got on my t1ts !!

Cheers Dave

for me I am driving around 7k to 9k per year, if I will use fleece filter with 229.5 oil, can be once per year(oil and filter) since I was changing oil twice to 3 times per year with 229.1 oil.

what about FSS in my car, so if I reset it after change the oil can I use it as reference?

Question: using 229.5(Full synthetic) oil will consumes more oil since I have read in some links that after 10K miles you may loose 0.5 to 1 quartz is that true? while in my car after 3K miles with 229.1 oil there is no any oil loss?

Reading my owner's manual for the M113 engines, I'm seeing 229.3 and 229.5 (so, yep, I missed the 229.3 allowance), and while I haven't looked up every listed oil, the ones I do recognize all say full synthetic or pure synthetic.

I have changed today to Total Quartz 9000 5W40 with 229.3 and 229.5 MB approval and OEM fleece filter 10$ price.
Can I consider it as 229.5 specs oil and is it full syntheitc as total mentioned?will that oil save more fuel? And FSS is 10k miles so can I use it a reference?

I feel that the engine sound is more calm than quartz 7000.

You can probably go 10,000 miles with this oil and filter but you should definitely check oil level at least every 3000 miles if not more often

As you said , when you changed every 3000 miles you did not need to add oil but if you are going 10,000 miles you may need to add oil between changes.

Besides small oil leaks, engines also burn a bit of oil internally . Some engines consume so much oil a quart is required every 500-1000 miles . Sounds like yours doesn't burn much but it still may be low during a longer oil change interval

I personally cannot sit and drive 10,000miles between oil changes. Its such a cheap preventative maintenance that i do it literally every 3000-3500miles. Sometime at 2000miles. I go by once a year or 3500miles. I work at a shop from time to time and have access to mobil 1 0w40 (we order crates of it for about $4 a quart) filters we get in bulk which comes out to $5 for mann filters.

The expensivest oil change i do on my cars is the s65 almost 11quarts and oem filter at $15 lol my s500 gets a oil change every 4 months regardless of how much i drive (have to keep the daily reliable). I will attach a pic of the cams at 220,000miles.

Even if you do not have a shop walmart or even amazon is a cheap hook up on oils.

I agree with ruthless, there is no way I am going 10K miles on an oil change, no matter what anyone says. Oil is pretty cheap at the 2 places ruthless mentioned and a filter for these cars is maybe eleven bucks. I have a MightyVac so I simply suck out the old oil, replace the filter and add new oil. The hardest part is driving the old oil to the auto parts store where they have a giant tank to pour the old oil into. I use Mann or Hengst fleece filters, and Mobil One. I think the last time I bought oil on Amazon it was $22 for a 5-quart jug!

Ummm, ok that is will be ok since I am driving 8k miles per year so it will be ok 6k miles interval with this oil so as you all mentioned that as costless preventive maintenance and my engine only 5k mile after engine replaced

My interval's close to Dave's. Every one of my vehicles, except the Civic, gets new oil/filter every 5K miles. The Honda gets it every 3K. May be overkill, but my engines are happy.
